Judge Judy: 10 Things I've Learned from Her

A couple of months ago, during a TV lull, I sat down and watched Judge JudyNow, I'm about as much a fan of judge shows as much as I am of watching Jerry Springer announce the name of the baby daddy while two women get into a fistfight over the loser. But for whatever reason, that particular day, Judge Judy was on and I watched.

Of course I'd seen Judge Judith Sheindlin, one of the highest paid women in television, in interviews on The View and 60 Minutes, and  though I admired her longevity and the fact that she looked like a tough cookie, I'd never actually watched the show.

Was it an eye opener!

Part of what was most shocking was:

  • How many people don't listen.
  • How many people can take 2 + 2 and come up with 6.
  • How many otherwise normal people lose all manner of common sense when money is involved.
  • How many otherwise normal people lose all manner of common sense when love/ex-love is involved.
  • How many otherwise normal people don't in any way, shape or form want to take responsibility for their actions.

For example, there was the guy whose mother bought him a car even though he had a suspended license and no insurance. His girlfriend took over title of the car on the understanding he would keep up the car payments. He didn't, so she took the car back. He was suing to force his girlfriend to give him back the car, even though he had a suspended license and no insurance.

Judge Judy ripped him a new one for thinking he could drive around illegally with no license or insurance and that she would rubber stamp his illegal behavior by giving him back the car.  She told him when and only when he had a valid license and insurance, she would hear his case.  Until then, "Goodbye!"

Then there was the guy who had eight outstanding warrants because of traffic fines. When he finally was arrested, his girlfriend bailed him out by paying the fines. She was suing him because she wanted her money back. His defense? He never wanted the girlfriend to bail him out. He was fully prepared to do his six months in jail and not pay the fines.

Um, yeah.

Judy said that since he wasn't in jail and since he hadn't paid the fines, he owed his girlfriend the money for his fines.

"Goodbye!"

As you can tell, there are a lot of cases involving cars.

All this watching of Judge Judy has taught me quite a bit.  Here are the 10 lessons I've learned from my new TV hero:

1.  Straighten Up:   When you appear before Judge Judy, stand up straight, take your hands out of your pockets, speak only when spoken to, and remember "Um" is not an answer.

2.  Bring Proof:  You can say until you're blue in the face that your former best friend/boyfriend/ex-husband stole your heirloom bracelet your grandmother gave you, but unless you saw him do it or he confessed to it on tape, you have no case.

3.  A Loan is not A Gift:   When one person claims another person didn't pay back their loan, expect the other person to defend themselves by saying it was a gift.  Also expect that the "gift" recipient is lying.  There are very few people out there who can afford to or want to give "gifts" of $1000 or more.

4.  Ladies, Keep Your Purses Closed:  If you're a woman, never, ever put a new car in your name for your boyfriend.  Ever!  Yeah, he says his credit is bad and he'll keep up the car payments until he can put it in his own name, but it never, ever happens.  EVAH!

5.  Guys, Beware of Scorned Women:  On the flip side, if you're a guy, never, ever trust your girlfriend not to repossess your car if you've been paying on it faithfully but she gets pissed at you because the engagement ring you got her was too small.

6.  Leases Exist for a Reason:  When renting an apartment or room, always, always have a lease.  That whole, "We all knew who was supposed to pay what" excuse won't fly.

7.  Yes, You Are Reponsible:  If your 17-year-old son steals your car keys at eleven o'clock at night to take out his 14-year-old sister for a driving lesson and she then slams into a neighbor's car, don't try to say you're not responsible for the car repairs because the neighbor's car was sticking out of its parking space by about a foot.

8.  Money Can't Buy

Judge Judy does irreparable damage to the legal system in this country. Not to mention the fact that every decision you mention is extremely abusive.

A good judge does a lot of things, but one thing that a good judge doesn't do is interupt and mock people in her court, instead of giving them a single chance to make their case.

I have watched her show a good bit, and a vast majority of the time Judge Judy interrupts with jokes or personal attacks before the person she has already decided against can make their case. If you can't see the problem here than you just don't have any understanding of democratic societies, or political/legal philosophy in general.

What's worse than all of that is the fact that the purpose of her show is to produce ratings. Judge Judy makes decisions based on what will SELL rather than what is justified. For instance, the statement about her not "rubber stamping" illegal behavior is complete bullshit. There is no law against owning a car without insurance. Judge Judy actually ignored the law in that case, which also means this woman who bought a car for her son is out 1000s of dollars (when they could have just payed the girlfriend back the money, apologized, and kept their car). She did this not because it was ethically or legally right (because it was neither), but because people would be entertained by it. TV is one thing, but there is no place for that in the 3rd branch of government. Would you want the President, or a lower member of the executive branch doing a show like this>

I sympathize. Judge Judy can be tough to take at normal volume but at full blast--I can only imagine.

And yep, the trainwrecks are hard to ignore.

A kick in the pants can be a very good thing especially with people who go through life with blinders on.

And a couple of weeks ago, she told a young woman she didn't find her antics cute. Loved it.

TW's mom watches a lot of Judge Judy and let me tell you, it's impossible to nap while Judge Judy is blaring five feet from your bedroom (and I do mean blaring because TW's mom is a little hard of hearing and the TV sound is always extra loud.)

Even when I'm not trying to nap while she's on, it's hard to block her out. She yells. A lot. And those people are such a trainwreck that I can't help but follow along. A little.

I adore the gems that Judge Judy has dished out over the years. She's like a little reminder that doing nothing in life but creating bad situations for yourself is an empty existence and that the lax attitude towards self-betterment is the detriment of the youth of America.

I like when she explains very clearly to adults that they are behaving like idiots and her wagging finger and stern warnings tend to get heard.

I secretly also love when she tells young men that she's not their mother and therefore doesn't find their antics cute.

That though Marilyn (with the help of Harvey Levin) did wrest her crown from Judy's husband, Judy herself would be tough to beat, lol!

Okay, well I suggest a grudge match to the death, Judge Marilyn vs. Judge Judy--winner to be crowned, "Queen of TV Judges." ;-)

Judge Judy is certainly a worthy teacher but watching Judge Marilyn ( http://peoplescourt.warnerbros.com/about/judge.htm... ) on The People's Court is one of my favorite guilty pleasures. And, yes, it's because I learn so much. :)

Thanks for this fun post, Megan.

Yeah, the people can be very wacky, but some of them look just like normal people who've momentarily gone off the deep end.

It just goes to show how inspiration can come from anywhere. Congratulations on getting your business up and running!

In addition to her charitable work, one other thing I like about Judge Judy is that she appears to learn from her own mistakes.

She's been married to her current husband twice. In an interview, she said the first time she divorced him was because she was trying to turn him into something he was not.

Eventually she realized how much she still wanted to be with him, they married again a couple of years later and have been together ever since.

That's an excellent story and I'm glad you got your day in court and some restitution.

And that your doggie was okay.

I'll say it again, Judy taught me:

"How many otherwise normal people don't in any way, shape or form want to take responsibility for their actions."

Yeah, the other judge shows appear to be kissing cousins to Jerry Springer and God knows we don't need anymore of those!

But when it comes to Judge Judy, it fascinates me how many of the cases are really about common sense.

She watches her whenever her shifts allow her to. The people who appear in her court make me want to hurl things at the television so I don't watch.

Judge Judy is my hero. I want to be like her when I grow up. If you go to my website, www.homebadger.com ( http://www.homebadger.com ), and click on "About", you will see that I actually started my business as a result of a Judge Judy episode. I also admire her work on behalf of shelter dogs, etc. While she can sound tough sometimes, more people could use a little bit of tough common sense these days. If I could get her on my Internet radio show it would be the high point of my life (except for marrying my husband, having my daughter - OK, it would be huge...) Keep listening to her good sense! Like she says: "God gave you two ears and one mouth for a reason!"

I had learned enough from Judge shows to bring documentation and to tell a good story:

When I worked at an NBC news affiliate, the afternoons were deep in judge-show muck. Judge Judy was the only one I could tolerate while trying to work. She made me laugh on more than one occasion and, quite honestly, I think I learned a thing or two from her as well!
