Julie and Julia: The Movie from a Food Blogger's Perspective

For months the food world has been abuzz with opinions about Julie and Julia, the long-awaited movie based on the life of food legend Julia Child and writer Julie Powell, famous for cooking and blogging her way through Julia's cookbook, Mastering the Art of French Cooking. I saw the movie yesterday afternoon in Salt Lake City with a bunch of local food bloggers, in an audience that included many women from the era of Julia Child's TV show. There was laughter during the show, and applause when it ended, and as we walked out of the movie, our food blogger crowd was in complete agreement about one thing: we loved Meryl Streep as Julia Child.

Our feelings about Julie Powell were a bit less enthusiastic, but also mostly pretty positive. That may seem surprising, since some critics seem bound to prove that many bloggers have taken offense with Julie Powell and her attempt to re-define herself as a "writer" rather than a "blogger" now that she's a published author. Truthfully as I watched the movie, I found myself feeling a bit sorry for her.

I wasn't ever a cook with a strong connection to Julia Child. Although I participated once in the yearly food blogging event held on her birthday, I'm not sure I ever remember seeing her on TV other than snippets in news stories, and I only recently read My Life in France, in anticipation of the movie. Still, as I watched this movie, Julia came alive for me. I wept when she told her husband through tears that her younger sister was pregnant. I loved the scenes of Julia laughing and eating with gusto, and cheered for her when she finally received news that Mastering the Art of French Cooking was going to be published. Julia Child may well be the most successful female cook ever, and this movie left me feeling certain that she was a remarkable person who deserved every bit of success and attention that came her way.

In my opinion, Hollywood was much less kind to Julie Powell. As I watched the movie I found myself wishing I had read the blog, so I would know if Julie really described her year-long project as "a regimen" or referred to herself as "a bitch." Of course, I had heard about her penchant for the F-bomb (which didn't make it past her lips in the movie) but everything I knew about her blogger persona didn't bring me to expect her crying on the kitchen floor in a tantrum when her aspic was dropped. There were Julie moments in the movie I could certainly relate to as a blogger (such as when she got her first comment, which turned out to be from her mother) but as a cook, I found myself wondering why her accomplishment of cooking every recipe from such a challenging cookbook seemed taken for granted. Julie Powell herself has said that Julie in the movie is definitely not her, and as I watched this movie, mostly I wondered why Julie's story about blogging Julia Child's recipes as a way to bring meaning to her life couldn't have been portrayed in a way that acknowledged Julie Powell's weaknesses, but gave more credit for her accomplishments. Whether we like her or not, not many cooks or bloggers could have done what she did in that tiny New York kitchen, and her ability to build a community of people who followed along on her blog certainly helps the world at large to understand the appeal of food blogging. And even if none of that was enough, Julie helped to bring Julia Child's life to the big screen, something that every lover of fine cooking can be happy about.

Of course, when food bloggers get together, it's mostly about the food, so let's move on to the dishes we enjoyed at our pot-luck after the movie, plus movie reactions from the other Utah bloggers and links to lead you to other reactions to Julie and Julia from around the web.

I think most everyone agrees that Julia and not Julie is the highlight of the movie.  As more time has gone by, I'm starting to imagine that Nora Ephron planned it that way.  We will probably never know, but if nothing else I think we should thank Julie for being the springboard that permitted us to watch Meryl Streep playing Julia Child.  What a performance!

And I confess, I've never poached an egg.  Been thinking about trying it though.

I saw the movie on the weekend and left saying "if they have a DVD version that cuts out the Julie Powell bits, I'll buy it."  Streep (as always) delivered a stunning performance and Amy Adams did the best she could with the character she was given...and for that, I think she did very well.

I fondly recall Julia's sing-song voice and her happy "well that's the way it is" demeanor that pretty much carried through from her French Chef Days to her other shows.  I have a number of her cookbooks (ironically not MAFC I/II) and have flipped through them for inspiration time and time again.

I wasn't a fan of Powell's blog.  I read a few entries and thought unkind thoughts and didn't revisit unless a search took me there.  When her book came out I leafed through it several times; each time it was returned to the seller's shelf.  I found the writing weak and unengaging, portraying her as an egotistical boor--it simply wasn't my cuppatea, just as my own writing isn't someone else's cuppatea.

I'm not discounting Powell's influence in the foodblogging world, nor in the kitchens of her readers.  She did something many foodbloggers marvel at, through which she attracted an audience, some of whom she inspired, some of whom she entertained.

I agree with you that Ephron should have found a way of conveying to non-foodie audiences Powell's feat.  My only attempt at an explanation is that perhaps Ephron isn't a cook and therefore has no idea what it takes to do what Powell did.

Mind you, I wanted to step into her kitchen and show her how to poach an egg.  Good gravy.

I'll be posting my own review to Cardamom Addict...after I cook another Julia dish to accompany it--perhaps a poached egg dish ;)

Kim, making people hungry is part of the job description for a food blogger. Just to clarify though, not all those foods in the photos are Julia Child recipes, they're just what the SLC bloggers made for our party.

I did find the movie very interesting, especially the insight into Julia Child's character, which truly was something I never gave much thought before. She was indeed a remarkable person.

I was a non-cook who watched Julia Child regularly. I have no idea why she captivated me. I'm not even a big fan of French food - I usually find it heavy. (although the dishes in your pictures have me re-thinking that stance.) But I've been wanting to see the movie because Child's life is so fascinating. Thanks for the insights - I now have even more incentive to check out the film.

Your thoughts were great!  I can't wait to see the movie so I can weigh in too :)  I'm entirely jealous of your blogger get-together- what a fun way to see the movie & celebrate Julia Child.

What a fine interpretation of the movie.....

Kalyn Denny 5 pts

I have heard a lot of other food bloggers on Twitter expressing similar thoughts. And I agree 100%, Julia Child should certainly have been worthy of a movie on her own. I am so often disappointed by how Hollywood interprets books for the screen, as if they feel they have to "dumb it down" for American audiences, and this is another of those times.

I guess my question is why did Hollywood find it necessary to do the movie on both women when Julia Child's life is so fascinating on its own? Her memoir is captivating. Meryl Streep IS Julia Child in the movie and frankly her parts are the most interesting.

I can understand how Julia Child never wanted her life's work and pioneering spirit to be ultimately tied with some one she never met or wanted to meet. That's a bit of identity theft if you ask me.

Don't get me wrong, I appreciate Julie Powell's commitment and hard work in cooking every recipe and blogging about it and find her sense of humor, frankness and vulnerability compelling but I just wish Julia Child could have her own movie preferably staring Meryl Streep – I want to see more!

I was so inspired by how Julia always saw the best in things, and her determination to do what she thought must be done. No wonder she accomplished so much!

What a beautiful way to celebrate this movie.  I actually loved every bit of it and was looking forward to seeing it so much that I dragged my husband and my two children to go see it.  It made me want to aspire to be more than myself...Both women gave me that feeling.

Julie made me excited to blog with passion, with conviction.  I'm new to the blogging world and to see how anyone can create a community is inspiring.

And what a wonderful treat it was to see Meryl Streep bring Julia Child back to life.  Oh, what I wouldn't give to have been a student right along side Julia during that time at Le Cordon Bleu...it would have been a dream come true.

All in all, it was a movie that I will cherish in my soul...and I say if you don't like butter, well then put some cream in it :)

I have no doubt that if Julia was alive now she would want to be a food blogger.

I think the feeling of community is one of the most fun things about blogging.

. . . is very much alive!

Don't you think Julia would have loved food blogging if she were a young foodie today?

Her joy of food and living and her adventurous "can-do" attitude would have fit with today's food blogging world.

Thank you, Kalyn, for helping to give food blogging a "community" feeling!

Kalyn, thanks for your thoughtful perspective on the movie, which I can't wait to see, and the potluck after the screening sounds like it was so much fun! What a terrific celebration of the movie, food blogging, and community.

I recently read and reviewed "My Life In France" by Julia Child and really enjoyed the book.  I will be sure to see Julia and Julia soon as well as a local French Restaurant since I can't seem to get those food images out of my head.  www.floridagirlmidwest.blogspot.com ( http://www.floridagirlmidwest.blogspot.com/ )

Thanks! I'm guessing you guys will love the movie as much as we did.

As for Julie, this movie actually made me *want* to read the book (which I never really had any interest in before) simply because the way they portrayed her seemed so contrived to contrast with Julia Child for maximum dramatic impact that now I'm very curious about the "real" Julie Powell.

-- this is the first review I've seen, Kalyn, even from bloggers, that talks about the Julie character from a blogger's perspective. I've been reading the book for awhile now, Julie Powell is completely neurotic and whiney there, sounds as if some of that comes through. But the idea of celebrating Julie's huge accomplishment, one, really, that I think only a food blogger might completely understand? Brava!

Yours sounds like a fun afternoon. The St Louis food bloggers are going today, don't think we're quite so organized!

Well done, Kalyn!  You did a fabulous job capturing the essence of the movie and our impressions of the characters.  Meryl Streep really was Julia Child incarnate.  Fabulous photos!  Your photo of my mushroom crostini dish makes my photo look so sad.

It was wonderful to meet all of the Utah food bloggers who were able to attend yesterday. And thanks to Julia for inspiring us in the first place.

Thanks for putting Friday's movie and nosh together.  I LOVED Julie and Julia! I am looking forward to getting to know all of the amazing Utah Food Bloggers. The food prepared was delicious and it was lovely to share this movie with others who came from the same perspective as a foodie/blogger/ writer.  It made it kind of an "insiders" experience ;)
