[Editor's Note: I realize this was a July challenge and it's now August, but I'm fascinated by Katy's social experiment. She's trying to feed her family of four (with two teens) on what she would get in food stamps. -Rita]

July Food Stamp Challenge

The SNAP (Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program) website states that “The average monthly benefit was about $101 per person” which is what I’m going to work with. This number appears to be based on 2008 numbers, but is the most recent info on the website. This number simplifies the challenge, although your state, (Alaska and Hawaii) may have a higher allotment.

My husband and I have had to use a food banks. They give you groceries for only 3 months but it last two people about a week and 1/3. We have applied for food stamps. We haven't heard anything back from them. Well if you go by the governments nutrition paramid and live on food stamps. It is not possible. They need to balance the paramid with the food stamp benefits that you receive. If you ate healthy as the paramid says then you would spend the food stamp money in one week. Fruit servings, vegetable servings, etc, I would like to see if someone could follow the paramid and the amount you receive for food from SNAP. That would be a challenge.
