July Theme for NaBloPoMo and a Writing Contest

BlogHer Original Post

It's that time again; time to commit to posting every day for a full month by joining in with NaBloPoMo. The point? Well, beyond the endurance factor -- of becoming a writing athlete -- there's the benefit from daily writing. I use it as a way to warm up before getting into book writing. And then there's the community aspect: joining NaBloPoMo is like joining a gym. You're writing in a group and feeding off that for motivation rather than writing alone.

So what is the NaBloPoMo theme of the month?

SWIM

Hopefully the Southern Hemisphere will forgive the Northern Hemisphere for having swimming on the brain. But it's more than just pools -- when things are going well, we say they're going swimmingly. We can sink or swim. And of course there are always bloggers swimming against the stream. I think it's a theme everyone can dive into.

Get it? Dive into?

You can explore how and when you learned to swim, tell us where you like to swim, or unusual places where you've gotten in the water. What about what you've seen while underwater? Or... cough... things you've done in the water (skinny dippers, raise your hands!).

Best of all, we're going to pick one NaBloPoMo post to publish this month on BlogHer. Not only will your work show up in the BlogHer.com editor’s picks and be promoted to the BlogHer audience, but you will be paid for this published piece. Want to enter?

  • Sign up for July's NaBloPoMo and commit to posting every day for the month of July on your blog. (You can also cross-post your writing on the NaBloPoMo site.)
  • Choose and answer one of the daily prompts in a post. You can see the current prompt on the front page of NaBloPoMo each day or you can get them on Twitter by following @BlogHerBlogging.
  • Please fill out this form any time between July 1st and July 20th (11 pm EST). You may only enter one post and you cannot change the post once you enter.
  • The winner will be emailed by July 24th and the post will run on BlogHer and be promoted on July 26th. The winner will be paid $50 in August for this July post.

If you've never joined NaBloPoMo, this is the time to do so. It starts July 1st and run until July 31st. Just sign up for a free account and make the commitment to blog daily for the month by adding your name to the blogroll. Then make a promise to (1) write every day for a month and (2) to support your fellow NaBloPoMo'ers by reading a handful of the other blogs on the blogroll. Cheer them along and they'll cheer you on too.

It's as simple as that: post daily on your own blog. That's it. You can get fancy and cross-post your blog posts onto the NaBloPoMo site. If you need inspiration, grab one of the daily prompts (always found at the top of the NaBloPoMo site, Monday through Friday).

NaBloPoMo is what you make of it. At its core, all you need to do is post daily on your blog. The point of NaBloPoMo is not to be restricted by the theme, but instead to either take it or leave it. If you'll do better blogging every day based on what's happening in your world, throw aside the daily prompts (or just use one this month in order to join the writing contest and then eschew the others).

So where is one place you dream about swimming one day or returning to? If you can answer this question, you certainly have a blog post in you, and to do NaBloPoMo, you just need to multiply that by a full month of posts.
