Kérastase Soleil--because the swimming pool wants to destroy your hair

I don't even want to tell you how much money I spend on my hair color. I go to the salon about once a month, and I get the whole shooting match: base color, highlights, lowlights, and a glaze. As a friend of mine says, "it costs a lot of money to look this natural."

I don't begrudge the money I spend--even though my children are going to have to give up their dreams of a college education. But hey! I have my priorities, people.

The question is, how can I protect my investment? Particularly in the summer, when everything I want to do damages my already fragile hair--and strips the color. I spend a lot of time in the pool. And at the beach. And to misquote Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz, "sunshine and chlorine and salt, oh my!"

The good news is that Kérastase has a line of sun- and chlorine- and salt-protective products. And they work!

The bad news is that they're really expensive. So I have a tendency to use my regular color saving products. Coincidentally enough, these are also by Kérastase. (They're not cheap--at all--but they're paid for.)

But this waterproof hair gel

kerastase gel

is worth the $34 they're charging. When I'm going to swim laps, I rinse my hair with tap water, apply about a tablespoon of Kérastase Gelée Aqua-Proof, and then put on my cap. The gel creates a waterproof barrier that keeps the chlorine in the pool from leaching the color out of my hair.

It's a wet-look gel, which let's face it, might leave you looking like a backup singer for a rockabilly group. But I don't mind. I'm training for a triathlon, so I already look like a big dork in my tank suit, goggles, and bathing cap.

The Soleil line includes a range of products, and my next purchase will probably be the Crème UV Defense, which is supposed to save your hair from sun damage. It's a cream rather than a gel, so I'm planning to try that one at the beach when I'm not being a lap-swimming geek. (I'll let you know if Crème UV Defense, like the Gelée Aqua-Proof leaves me looking like Alfafa from The Little Rascals.)

Although even it is does, I'll probably keep using it.

You know what they say: healthy, happy, natural-looking hair? Priceless.

This is perfect timing, as I'm getting my hair highlighted on Tuesday!  I'm constantly in the pool helping my son (swim team bound!) and my hair feels like crispy-fried straw afterwards.  THANKS!

but I don't know whether it's actually ready for it.

Remember what happened to Semele when Zeus revealed himself to her in all his glory.

YOU GUYS!!!!!

Is this the coolest thing ever or what? The actual Vermont Country Store has shown up to help me!

It's just like that scene in Annie Hall when Woody Allen gets Marshall McLuhan to tell the Columbia professor that he doesn't have the faintest clue about his theories.

I mean, this is just the coolest thing EVER.

Copychief, I <3 U. I'm going to order three of those caps, I pinky-swear it.

but I doubt I could talk the triathlon officials into letting me swim while I smoked a cigarette. Although I admit that's an arresting image.

And swimming with my head sticking out of the water will slow me down to the point where I might as well not enter the competition.

I'm going to ask my trainer (please stop laughing--I really do need to have someone teach me how to do a flip turn without snorting a pool's worth of chlorine up my nose) what she uses. I'm guessing hard-core swimmers with highlighted hair know all the really kewl products.

I think it is amazing that someone from the Vermont Country Store commented here and has your flowery hat.

But that thing's gonna create way too much drag during the race.

I have some squirty green Kerastase stuff for my hair that my hair person sold me. It works, when I remember to use it.

I totally want a photo of the cap+hair gel+goggles.

Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water...guess what? That bathing cap with the flowers all over it? We sell it, too. I'm in charge of copy for The Vermont Country Store, and I couldn't bear to think of you in your triathlon without this cap and its colorful flowers. So head to vermontcountrystore.com and type in #29878, and you'll be the belle of the lake. Hey, keep it on for the bike ride and the run, and improve your look if not your time. Good luck!

You could also just stay out of the water altogether, right? Or just swim with your head sticking out above water. I swear I saw someone do this in a movie -- she swam and smoked a cigarette at the same time.

I'd ask if there was a cheap, drugstore alternative to this, not because I'm financially responsible and whatever but because I like to prever to blow my beauty budget on expensive nail polish.

I'm still searching for the perfect products. I'd love something cheaper!

I'd also love one of those old-fashioned grown-up-lady bathing caps with a chin strap. Because what's the point of wearing a cap if it keeps rising s-l-o-w-l-y off my head as I swim? But that's a whole other issue. Meanwhile The Vermont Country Store sells a strapless bathing cap that they claim creates a better seal:

Of course, what I really want is a bathing cap covered with big plastic flowers ...

I tried coloring my hair a few times, but recently decided that I can't commit to it at this point.  I can maintain my brows or my hair, but not both.  It helps that I only have about 17 gray hairs.

Is that really all you use? Interesting - we have synchronized swimmers and the chlorine really does fry their hair, even though they use a cap for most of their practices.

Good hack - though expensive - we'll give this a try when they start synchro again.
