Congratulations BlogHer community, please take a bow -- you are the face of media influence in 2009. BlogHer is #4 on Katie Couric's list of the "seven most powerful people in media". As her contribution to Forbes.com's "One in a Billion" initiative, Ms. Couric chose:

#1: Sergei Brin and Larry Page, Google Co-founders
#2: Julius Genachowski, Chairman of the FCC
#3: Arianna Huffington, Co-founder, The Huffington Post
#4: BlogHer Co-founders Jory Des Jardins, Elisa Camahort Page and Lisa Stone
#5: Craig Newmark, Founder of Craigslist
#6: Biz Stone and Evan Williams, Twitter Co-founders of Twitter
#7: Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook Co-founder

There's not a single traditional media company on this list, which makes us think Ms. Couric is talking about who in media represents communities with the potential and power to truly move the needle when she writes, "[A]mong the many millions of sites and the svengalis behind them, there are a few classics that stand out."

We agree: The accelerating influence of women in social media is stunning, just ask us [PDF].

BlogHer's mission -- to create opportunities and economic empowerment for women in social media -- is the driving force behind a community that now reaches more than 20 million* people each month via conferences, the BlogHer.com news service and a network of more than 2,500 excellent blogs. (*Nielsen Netratings Site Census.)

Thanks, Katie Couric, we think women in social media are just getting started.

'I am BlogHer, hear me roar" I wrote this for old media in 07

The use of blogs and online forums to build a political voice for women will be discussed at this month's third annual BlogHer conference in Chicago, US, titled "A World of Difference".

The three-day conference is expected to host 1000 women.

Liza Sabater, a political panel member at BlogHer and a participant in the conference, believes blogging has improved women's lot in life.

"Some of my readers are mothers I meet at soccer or at gym events involving my children," says Ms Sabater, who is also the creator and lead writer of Culture Kitchen, ranked by ndnpac.org as one of the top 100 progressive blogs in the US.

"I have had friends who have thanked me for the site because 'you help me make sense of all information that's bombarded to me from TV and newspapers'.

"I am not just a blogger or online pundit. I am a real person and a real mum who helps people understanding politics by evaluating the spin from the facts."

Another of the speakers at the conference will be Kim Gandy, president of the US-based National Organisation for Women (NOW), the largest organisation of feminist activists in the US with 500,000 members.

Ms Gandy says the internet is invaluable in empowering women. She says the NOW site "has definitely exposed more women to the organisation".

"Women who don't have time to attend meetings or events are able nonetheless to participate in effective activism."

But how relevant is blogging for politics? According to the Pew Internet and American Life Project, twice as many Americans used the internet as a key source for information about the 2006 presidential campaign as for the previous one.

While Australia has been slower to catch up, some sites are growing in influence.

EMILY's List, the national organisation aimed at getting more progressive Labor women elected to parliament, uses its website to foster interaction among members.

EMILY's List convener Hutch Hussein says: "It definitely gives us wider reach and allows our 'expat' members to stay in touch and the opportunity to shape the society of their home country."

The BlogHer site burst into the blogsphere nearly two years ago. It is a community website in which more than 9000 women have registered their blogs, posted their views and shared experiences. The site was created by Elisa Camahort, Jory Des Jardins and Lisa Stone in an effort to answer the question, "Where are the women bloggers?".
Vita is an Australian blogger who will attend and speak at the BlogHer conference.

That is INCREDIBLE!!!  It's so comforting to know that when we combine  integrity, honesty and diversity - all our voices can be heard.    BlogHer is an amazing community.  I am proud to be a small part of it.

Yes  she is correct..... However WE  now have  the genune and more strategic opportunity to frame what Blogher can be....  Particularly  all those that are on this journey and continue  to create this social netwworking community... More importantly we can actually influence the future  as I said in 07... This bodes well for August 2010 .....

It pays to be at the frontier indeed  with Alot of courage and tenacity Mmmm..... As I said when you I met you Lisa it takes a visionary to step up and create the future ,,,,,Then what one see's in the other is what one has within oneself ... Also as you know  I followed you and several other early adopters of this medium long before you made the call "where are the women bloggers"

We have become the future and the walk on the mountain was worth the trek!!

You gals are the tops, you're the tower of Pisa, you're the smile on the Mona Lisa!

Just like you, too, Lisa, to frame this as a nod to the whole larger community. But without you three visionary conveners, we'd be all a-scattered hither and yon, doing amazing things but way, way, WAY more ignorant of one another, and certainly not the force we can be in this network.

Aggregating women online like this -- and in such a steadfastly community-driven, research-backed way -- has been a tremendous contribution, both to us and to the web at large. Totally worthy of Katie Couric's attention and praise.

Mazel tov!

While it's exciting see two women owned businesses in the top seven on this list, we need to remember that women still only make .78 for every 1.00 men make and continue to support each other in our efforts for parity.

Congratulations, BlogHer.

I love that theme song Lara -- I'm tempted to add two lines (and only two) from the Peggy Lee classic (popularized later by Enjoli perfume) of the same era:

[You] can bring home the bacon

Fry it up in a pan...

Influence = bacon! Okay, actually, no, my dear friend and vegan Elisa is going to kill me...

This is awesome and well-deserved; congrats to the three of you! For some reason, the theme song from the Mary Tyler Moore show began playing in my head when I read this news.

You can have a town, why don't you take it

You're gonna make it after all
