Katz Gluten Free Giveaway & Review

This month I am fortunate to take part in Katz's Gluten Free Summer Blogging Spectacular. If you live on the west coast, like me, then you probably are not familiar with Katz. The Katz Gluten Free Bake Shoppe established in 2006, is one of the first certified Kosher gluten free bakeries in New York. They are certified gluten free by the Gluten Intolerance Group ®, and are also a completely nut free and dairy free facility. Founded by a mother with two gluten intolerant children, "Mrs. Katz knows firsthand the hardships and daily struggles parents endure in their attempts to maintain a thoroughly gluten-free diet for their kids." Katz makes everything from breads, challahs, rolls, cakes, pies, muffins, cupcakes, rugelechs and cookies. This year Katz is celebrating the creation of their 40th gluten free product. To commemorate this achievement they have created the blogging spectacular, TWO giveaways and are offering some very sweet online deals.  More on the giveaway in a moment.

First off...I have to tell you how excited I was to be chosen to participate in the Blog Spectacular. For a week my family anticipated the arrival of our sample box. When it finally arrived I was at work, and luckily its contents were put in the refrigerator immediately and not disturbed. You may think that was an easy task, but when the box was opened the temptation was great...two pies, apple and cherry, and some sweet treat that looked a bit like cookies called sugared poppers.

Needless to say, we dug into the apple pie that night, before I thought to take a photo of all the goodies (see half eaten pie). D'oh! Oh, but it was worth it. Delectable, light, flaky crust full of apple goodness, reminiscent to your mom's (or grandmother's) baked apple pie. No really, it is that good. Unfortunately we were not as impressed by the cherry pie or the sugared poppers.

The cherry pie has the same crust (of course), and the filling looked amazing, but for some reason we couldn't taste the cherries. I know... "Whatcha talkin about Willis?" How can a cherry pie not taste like cherry. At first we thought maybe we were eating too much crust and it was overpowering the delicate flavor. So we scooped out just the filling and made sure to grab some cherries. Still not any better. Since we're not privy to how Katz makes their cherry pie, the best way I can describe the flavor is that it tastes as if the cherries have been overcooked. That's right, cooked so much that there isn't any flavor left. A bit disappointing to say the least.

The sugared poppers were not a disappointment, but more of a matter of figuring out what to compare it too? Is it a cookie? A wafer? To me it seemed more like a funky shaped biscotti. I say biscotti, because that is the best way to describe the taste and the texture. It is very dry, hard and crunchy, but not extremely sweet or flavorful, and is best probably used with coffee. I was the only one who actually liked them. They probably would have gone over better if they had more flavor, like some cinnamon, or vanilla, or hazelnut or chocolate. One of the typical biscotti flavors you find at coffee shops. Either way, I thought they were great with my chai. Just tasting 3 out of the 40 Katz products, makes me want to go try the rest of them. Especially the cupcakes!
