Kerri Walsh-Jennings Won Olympic Gold While Pregnant

BlogHer Original Post

What's more impressive than winning a third-straight Olympic gold medal (wearing a bikini no less)? Winning it while five weeks pregnant.

In an interview Monday on the "Today" show, beach volleyball player Kerri Walsh-Jennings revealed that she was pregnant while competing at the Olympics last month. Walsh-Jennings and her long-time teammate, Misty May-Treanor, won their third gold medal in London.

Walsh-Jennings told Matt Lauer she was five weeks pregnant during the Games. She and husband Casey Jennings, already have two sons, Joey, 3, and Sundance, 2. The due date for baby number three is April 9, 2013.

She didn't know she was pregnant while she was competing, but Walsh-Jennings, who is normally very upbeat, suspected she might be because she was "moody" during the Games. She said May-Treanor wondered why her teammate was so grouchy and said as a joke, "You're probably pregnant."

How right she was.

"I thought it could have been the stress of the Games, and travel kind of throws your schedule off, but I knew," Walsh-Jennings said. "At some point, you're late and then you start feeling something. And I definitely started feeling something in London."

And now she is dealing with that joy of expectant motherhood: morning sickness. Via Facebook Walsh-Jennings says:

So .... ;) I'm a tank! Just over 11 weeks pregnant and so very happy about it (not the "tank" part!). The boys are fired up and most days seem to think we are having a girl. We shall see! Casey & I are thinking the same thing.
Love hugs and thanks so much for all the well wishes, Congrats and enthusiasm. We feel truly blessed and over the moon happy.

Always,
K

Walsh-Jennings and her husband joked that she gets a baby for every gold medal. Though May-Treanor retired after London, Walsh-Jennings (who is now paired with Nicole Branaugh) has said she wants to play in the 2016 Olympic Games. If she and her husband decide to go for baby number four, that puts a lot of pressure on her to win in Rio!

In the meantime, congrats Kerri and Casey - so much to celebrate.
