After a long winter here in Michigan, there is nothing better than finally being able to entertain outdoors. From pool parties to beach-side picnics to backyard BBQ's, we will take any excuse we can get to soak up some much needed Vitamin D. Recently my friends at Kettle Brand® asked me to create a summer inspired video recipe in honor of the season. Let me tell you, after months and months of being cooped up indoors, I jumped on the opportunity! If there is one thing Michiganders do not take for granted it is warm weather....more
Now that the weather has teased us with bits of spring for a couple of weeks, I've loved being outside as much as possible. Whether I'm outside playing with Ranger and Miss Annabelle or checking in on things around the farm, it really is my favorite place to be. So, I was thrilled to death when I was asked to plan my perfect picnic by BlogHer and Kettle Brand Chips.Y'all know by now that I am all about simple living - which includes simple, yet delicious recipes. Even though cooking and entertaining are my favorite things to do, I still believe simplicity is the best....more
Summer is almost here! And with summer comes lots of BBQ's and of course, picnics!! It's been a long time since I've been on a picnic, but I have very fond memories of packing picnics to take the beach or out fishing with my dad. I also remember making picnic lunches for my mom. She would get home around lunch time and I made her go sit outside at the picnic table and then I made a menu with two options for sandwiches on it. I always wanted her to pick the tuna salad because that was all I knew how to make and she knew that, so of course, she always went for the tuna....more
One of my favorite things about summertime is picnics. Is there really anything better than climbing out of the (kiddie) pool and then eating a portable lunch on the warm ground? Blanket underneath, ice cold drinks in hand, and the kids shoving their food in their mouths so fast so that they can get back to playing? I took my kids and a bag of Kettle Brand Chips on a picnic to the park recently. Do not worry though, there were sandwiches involved too!...more
We used to have nice lazy spring days, going to the beach or relaxing at home by the pool. However, now that my son is obsessed with baseball, we spend hours and hours during the week and weekend at the baseball field. I know so many of you can relate. But you know what? I actually love it. Because we are at the field so much, we have not so fancy picnics at the baseball park. I wish I would say I brought a beautiful wooded thatched picnic basket and we sprawled out on a red and white gingham picnic blanket...yeah, that doesn't happen....more
Spring is here! Spring is here! Spring is here!!! What does that mean? Fresh air flowing through open windows, sunshine warming faces and arms... and picnics! We are blessed to have a beautiful backyard to enjoy, and goodness does food just taste better outside, ya know? Also, packs of messy kids are much more easily hosed off outside and crumbs are food for the birds, so no clean up for me. WooHOO! I love picnic weather!! I don't love eating the same foods over and over and over again though, so I am always trying to come up with new, fun, 'outside' food recipes....more
With Memorial Day right around the corner, picnic season is about to get into full swing! I can't wait because my husband and I spend many summer weekends at a nearby lake grilling. However, a lot of picnic food can end up being fatty, such as pasta dishes, prepackaged foods, brats, etc. My husband and I try to make conscious decisions regarding the foods that we bring, especially since we picnic so frequently. A couple of things that you can always count on finding in our coolers are fresh fruits and vegetables. They are healthy and easy to pack. Just wash, cut, pack, and go!...more
I grew up a deprived child. My mother hated (and still hates) peanut butter. Do you know what that meant for lunch time in elementary school? No PB&J sandwiches. Ever. Instead, I was the weird kid with cream cheese & jelly sandwiches, on wheat bread and usually with a piece of fruit in my lunchbox instead of whatever cool, highly processed snack was in at the moment. Thanks, mom. Come the summer time though, jelly got replaced with tomatoes and without any lunchtime kids around to judge the weird creation, I openly loved it....more
Say what you will about crazy Californians, you just can’t beat the weather. Some people embrace snow and winter sports, but that was never for me. I’m a much happier person since moving back four years ago - I have the windows open in March, adorn my flip-flops in April, and start my garden long before Memorial Day weekend. And we can enjoy picnics sooner. Not a fake carpet picnic, looking longingly out the window at bare trees. No. A real picnic! With blissful temperatures, a breeze, on a blanket, outside, under full trees. And picnic food....more
One of the many things that we are loving about our new home is the YARD! Our last apartment was tiny. Tiny and on the third floor of a building with a large, wrap-around parking lot. In other words: there was very little space for stretching your legs. Plus, we were there for all of the winter months. So even if we had wanted to wander the parking lot, it was a little too cold and rainy for that. Now that spring has sprung and we have a yard, we're a pretty happy crew in this house. Emma loves being outside! And it has been so much fun to just let her let loose in the yard....more
