Join the cause with KFC and Susan G. Komen for the Cure!

Did you know that one in eight women in the US will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime and breast cancer is the leading cause of death among US women ages 40-59?

KFC is Joining the Cause in helping fight this devastating disease through Buckets for the Cure™, a partnership with Susan G. Komen for the Cure® Look for special pink commemorative buckets at participating KFC restaurants. For every Pink Bucket, KFC makes a 50 cent contribution to Susan G. Komen for the Cure. The Pink buckets will be available in KFC restaurants through May 23rd.

To help raise awareness, we have joined up with KFC and asked 8 bloggers to share how breast cancer has affected their lives. For every comment on this post and on the bloggers' posts, BlogHer will donate $1 to Susan G. Komen for the Cure®.*

Read these stories and leave a comment. BlogHer will donate $1 for each comment, up to $1,000.

Sweet Life recounts that despite being in her eighties, her great-aunt “was just as likely as a ten year old to have an impromptu root beer float party.” Read more about the vivacious Mary Alice, who fought breast cancer four times…

Fiercebeagle recounts how she “had witnessed this woman wrangle thirty sixth-graders at a theme park like Calamity Jane on a cattle drive. If she couldn't handle this, well...the situation was dire.” Read more about Fiercebeagles mother-in-law's struggle with breast cancer.

Beyond Breast Cancer shares that “by Christmas, a flurry of tests and biopsies proved that I was one of the one in eight women in the US who will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime.”  Read more about how she's coping with her diagnosis.

Noodleroux remembers “more lumps, bumps, and 23 year later, my mom was diagnosed with stage 2 breast cancer. She’d had a clean mammogram four months earlier. The tumor was the size of a large grape.” Read about how Noodleroux herself had a lumpectomy at age 23…

Prairie Mama shares her account of her great-grandmother’s breast cancer experience.  “She had her surgery, a double radical mastectomy, and was hospitalized for three weeks…Never did I think of her life as being in danger-her mortality was never an issue. She wasn’t going to die...”

Meanderings of a 3-Day Mom felt that “when my Mom died in July 2007, I had a choice to make. I could roll over and play dead, or I could get in gear and make a difference.  I chose to walk in the Susan G. Komen 3-Day for the Cure™.  Our 3-Day team, Team Tiara, has raised $300,000 in the last four years -- and we're shooting for the $500,000 mark this year.  What we've contributed is just a drop in the bucket, though.”

Verbalintent is so thankful that her mom, a ten year survivor, “is alive and preparing to greet her fifth and sixth grandchildren this summer - none of whom she would have known had she not beaten the odds against this disease.” Read about how her mother is offering support to recently diagnosed cancer patients.

The Heart of Life in Oklahoma remembers hearing the news of her aunt’s diagnosis.  “It was the worst possible news we could have imagined.  Started in her breast and had metastasized to her bones and other areas and organs.”

The pink buckets will be available in restaurants through May 23. Help KFC make THE SINGLE LARGEST DONATION EVER in the fight against Breast Cancer

So...fried foods and cancer...and the suffering of animals? This is quite possibly the poorest campaign you could think of. When I heard about this, I wholeheartedly threw my support behind other foundations after being a supporter for years.

Of course I support the cause of breast cancer awareness & finding a cure, but this whole Komen/KFC connection is nothing more than a way for KFC to boost its own profits. If you really want to help, why not donate money directly to an organization, rather than spending lots of money on crap-masquerading-as-food so that 50 cents will (hopefully) make its way to a breast cancer organization?

This is amazing that so many are ignoring the dangers of eating chemical + hormone riddled chickens 'raised' in horrid conditions, slaughtered in terror, and then shipped off to be drenched and fried in FAT.
How can anyone feel good that they've contributed to cancer research by eating KFC?

I was horrified when I saw the ads for this KFC/Koman campaign. Appauled and ashamed that women would support this.

Awareness is important, but poison is a crime.

Koman foundation made a mistake.

I think this campaign is ridiculous! I appreciate that KFC wants to help, but this was conviniently started at the same time the Double Down (AKA Double Bypass) came out. Tumor cells feed on so manyu things in KFC, it is like Cadbuy or Mars starting a campaign to help diabetes.

That Blogher would affiliate with KFC, especially as an advocate for breast cancer.

There is nothing healthy about KFC.

Also, we are pay $20 buck for a bucket of high fat food that contributes to unhealthiness and they will donate a meesly 50 cents?!

Are you for real?

Do the walk, get some exersice and get some real donations for this worthy cause.

All those that have lost someone to breast cancer, I am sure if they were here today, they wouldn't want you eating crap in the name of finding a cure.

We can find a cure in a sensible way.

Shame on anyone who promotes this.

Dear Blogher,
I lost my mother to inflammatory breast cancer; she was 51 and I was 22. It is unclear if my paternal grandmother died from breast cancer (poor communication) although she was diagnosed with breast cancer and did not seek treatment. I have a dear friend whose mother has breast cancer and is successfully fighting it for 1 year. I have another friend who has just been diagnosed with breast cancer, stage III. She has a son who is grown and out of the house and a daughter in middle school. She is having her double mastectomy next week. This is an awful disease that affects so many people. Thank you for your donation.

People are not obese because they eat fast food they are obese because they eat fast food far to much and then go home sit on their butts and watch tv rather than getting out and exercising the buckets for a cure campaign isn't going to make people tha normally are healthy people fat I think this is a wonderful way to get the word out about breast cancer awareness and raise money for SGK

What is wrong with you people? Have you been completely brainwashed? KFC is a heinous corporation peddling an unhealthy product that yes, will actually lead to a greater chance of getting cancer. Not to mention their appalling record of animal cruelty! And the Komen Foundation is merely a for-profit monolith that will go to any lengths to line its pockets.

Think for yourselves people! Do you think KFC gives a damn about anything other than their bottom line and promoting their brand?Wake up.

This campaign to "support" breast cancer research is an example of irresponsible "pinkwashing"! I am both a nutritional epidemiologist and a woman who is undergoing chemo for Stage IIIB inflammatory breast cancer. Given recent research suggesting a link between obesity and breast cancer, and the disproportionate presence of KFC in minority communities, the Komen Foundation's acceptance of this kind of funding is irresponsible and unethical. It is important to know the details on this "historic" partnership - see breast cancer action website at www.bcation.org ( http://www.bcation.org )

with what appeared to be breast cancer when I was only 22 years old. I remember my knees giving out when the specialist rounded the corner and exhaled, gray in the face, summoning me into the back room.

It turned out to be benign fibroaedenoma, but I remember the cold fear that ran through me and I don't think any woman should have to feel that.

I support the ability we have to make a difference with our comments and our posts, and though I may not eat KFC, I think this initiative can only do good things.

Thank you, all you survivors and survivor witnesses, for sharing your brave and emotional journeys.

This is a true story....I was involuntarily enrolled at sixteen to walk with my father's company in a walk for the cure on the beautiful coast of San Diego, CA. I was less than thrilled. Last thing I wanted to be doing on a Saturday was walking with my dad and his old cronnies on a bright beachy day. I grumbled and poutted the whole morning. Matters seemed dire when we arrived and I noticed I was the only teenager their. In true teenage fashion when the walk started I placed myself a full block ahead of my father, as much out of his line of sight as I could get. I was keeping pace with a group of women in their early 30's and listened in as they talked freely about kids and bills and car trouble; normal everyday conversations. Nearing the end of the walk the tallest lady (Barbara) glanced over at me and gave a smile then slowed to walk beside me. Within 30 seconds I was telling her my angst. She nodded and smiled then pointing to they youngest in her group she said "That young lady their was diagnosed with breast cancer a month ago most morning she is so sick from chemo she can't get out of bed, her hair has all fallen out and she may have to lose a breast. So I guess we all have our problems." I felt like scum. I blubbered some apologie, and looked and my sneakers. She invited me to have lunch with them after the walk I accepted. These women made such and impact in my life. I walked ever year with my fathers company and even after I left married and had children of my own I support the the Fight for the Cure any way I can.

Look, I get that every dollar is a good dollar when an organization needs money. And I get that we want to cure cancer. But here's a little something: buying a bucket of chicken, no matter how much gets donated will never, ever cure cancer.

The fact is that when you buy a bucket of chicken at KFC, MORE of your money goes towards crap that causes cancer than cures it.

I have an idea. Let's not buy the damn chicken in the first place. Donate 50 cents to any breast cancer group you like. (I prefer Breast Cancer Action - they don't take money from the big polluters that cause cancer in the first place).

You know what else? I miss my mom too - both breasts removed and the cancer still took her, nearly ten years ago. But I know that if she were here, she'd tell you that you could paint that bucket any color you like, but it won't hide the fact that it's still crap.

As one of the women participating in this program, I just have to say a HUGE Thank you to everyone who has left a comment!!!

Raising awareness about breast cancer -- and raising funds for the CURE take up a LOT of my time. I'm proud to be a part of this campaign.

Breast cancer is not a disease that just effects blue-haired Grammas driving Cadillacs. Breast cancer knows no economic, social, religious, age, race or gender backgrounds.

People who eat at KFC have boobies, too! If KFC can help us reach people we might not have reached otherwise -- and help us raise funds we might not have raised otherwise, I'm all for it.

One bucket of chicken does not obesity make. Some of my fondest memories of childhood involve the picnics we would have after the rodeo parade each summer. My Grandad could always be counted on to bring a bucket of Extra Crispy for the cousins. Mmmm.... takes me back.

Now.... Please spread the word that we need more comments!!! If BlogHer is willing to donate $1000 for the cure, we need to make sure we have 1000 comments!

And be sweet!

Many Blessings,
D'Lyn Biggs

My sweet sister-in-law died of Breast Cancer last August, leaving my 40-something brother a widow with four children under sixteen. I hate cancer. I support anyone who is willing to drum up money to fight cancer.

Money is what it takes for this fight, and I would never presume to say cancer research doesn't need your donations because you promote being unhealthy. Moderation is what is healthy. A bucket of chicken might do the soul good every once in a while.

Let's all lighten up here, and enjoy the fact that awareness is being rasied in a fight against a common (I defy you to find someone who is not touched by cancer) enemy.

My family has always been big Susan G. Komen supporters but when my grandmother was diagnosed with breast cancer {and my grandfather with prostate two weeks later} it made our love of this foundation even stronger. In September my grandmother died {suddenly not of cancer} and we requested that people not send flowers and only make donations to a cancer foundation or to the local library{she was a librarian} and it was just awesome how many people did just that.

Sure let's cure cancer and in the meantime promote obesity, and cardiovascular diseases (still the n.1 killer, btw) and bad habits! Honestly? What is next "Smoke for the cure". My grandmother died of breast cancer and trust me I feel the pain of all of those affected by this terrible disease. but this campaign just makes no sense at all. Just look at the data and look at the studies. How can we ignore that?...if it's all about collecting funds for research based on the "no matter what it takes" rule then they truly should explore the idea of partnering with tobacco and alcohol companies—there's big money there!

I agree that fried chicken is unhealthy but I have to believe that people know what they are getting themselves into when they go to KFC.

I can't make them eat healthy, but I can comment to help support. And hope that this endorsement, albeit oddly placed on a bucket of fried chicken, will help the cause and encourage women to think of their health moving forward.

I agree with Meg! This is a stain on the foundation. Now we do not race for the cure anymore? but instead we eat unhealthy food rich in fats? after all the studies that correlate diets rich in fats to cancer? especially breast cancer? And the problem is this is giving an excuse to those who buy junk food to buy it even more "oh it's for a good cause!".
This is just unbelievable! how about a nice bag of apples for the cure or a salad? There are so many options out there. Did SKF had to pick the worst?

MEG54 5 pts

This is one of the poorest examples I've seen yet for breast cancer awareness. Just when I thought I had seen the dumbest promotions, this one comes along.

The fried chicken at KFC was the wrong choice. A bucket full no less!

This is so terribly unhealthy and counter to all the empowerment messages about risk reduction through good nutrition and exercise.

Here is the ingredients list for chicken bought at KFC:

Seasoning (Salt, Monosodium Glutamate, Garlic Powder, Spice Extractives, Onion Powder), Soy Protein Concentrate, Rice Starch and Sodium Phosphates. Battered with: Water, Wheat Flour, Leavening (Sodium Acid Pyrophosphate, Sodium Bicarbonate, Monocalcium Phosphate), Salt, Dextrose, Monosodium Glutamate, Spice and Onion Powder. Predusted with: Wheat Flour, Wheat Gluten, Salt, Dried Egg Whites, Leavening (Sodium Acid Pyrophosphate, Sodium Bicarbonate), Monosodium Glutamate, Spice and Onion Powder. Breaded with: Wheat Flour, Salt, Soy Flour, Leavening (Sodium Acid Pyrophosphate, Sodium Bicarbonate), Monosodium Glutamate, Spice, Nonfat Dry Milk, Onion Powder, Dextrose, Extractives of Turmeric and Extractives of Annatto. Breading Set in Vegetable oil.

The only completely non-toxic ingredients are the onion powder, sodium bicarbonate, and the garlic powder. These are only 3 ingredients out of 29, which means KFC ingredients are only 10% natural, and about 90% chemically "enhanced".

This is sad. Talk about mixed messages. Perhaps the goal is to distract us from heart disease and obesity?

Shame on all of us if we fall for this. Come on SG Komen for the Cure, you can do better than this! This one wins the Bra of Shame.
