Much has been said about Kim Kardashian and Kris Humphries’ divorce after only 72 days of being man and wife. In a typically sexist backlash, the media has wasted no time making Kardashian seem more interested in her personal endeavors than in attending to her marriage. Kris Humphries, they gleefully note, is not working due to labor negotiations with the NBA, which continue to break down and which have essentially resulted in a cancelled season. This should have provided the newlyweds some time to settle into married life, articles add. Except Kim Kardashian is a horrible workaholic.
Little is said about how Humphries is spending his time beyond rumors that his partying may be rubbing Kardashian’s "work-ethic" the wrong way. But readers who encounter these gossip columns tend to leave feeling more annoyed that a "fame-whoring" Kardashian won’t cut hubby some slack than with any insight into the much-discussed celebrity couple’s relationship.

Cover of People following the wedding. Divorce papers.
After news of her Halloween divorce filing broke, most articles reporting the story made sure to mention how Kardashian had profited from her "Fairytale Wedding" two-episode special, which Kardashian negotiated with E! for $15 million, and the sale of her wedding photos, which netted another $3 million. The wedding may have cost $10 million, but Kardashian sure made it work for her every step of the way and then some.
Talking with Fox411, In Touch Weekly senior editor Dorothy Cascerceri estimated that Kardashian stands to make at least half a million selling her first post-divorce interview. Kardashian already makes some $10,000 whenever she tweets on behalf of a brand. Now that all eyes are on her stream to see how the divorce is going, that price could go up – and the same goes for her appearances at events.
If you're upset at the amount of cash this girl rakes in every time she blinks, the only person you have to blame is yourself. You’re the one who clicked on this article. Kim Kardashian may be out there on the red carpet or on your television, but she wouldn’t be there if the world wasn’t so keen on watching her and reading every word written about her.
Kim Kardashian essentially poured society's love/hate relationship with celebrities and our altogether dysfunctional obsession with weddings into a cocktail shaker and poured herself a victorious martini. She isn't the cause of the cult of celebrity -- she is a woman who knows how to play the game, and she plays to win.
There is also something to be said about a woman who can make such an incredible profit out of an event most couples willingly bankrupt themselves to have. Yes, I’m speaking about weddings. When I was young, my aunt told me, “I don’t get why people waste their nest egg on a huge celebration when so often, they haven’t even tested the strength of their union. Call me in ten years for a huge anniversary bash and then I’ll take it seriously.” She has a point and I’ve never forgotten it – it was one of the reasons I chose to elope in Las Vegas instead of doing the 700-person thing my parents did.
Kim Kardashian has done several things for us in a very short period of time. She has shown us how often we blame the woman when marriages go wrong, especially if she doesn’t give up her gig and get right into homemaking. She has shown us how ridiculous it is to worship at the altar of “your special day!” instead of focusing on how to build long-lasting relationships. And she has shown us how obsessed we are with celebrities – and how deep that love/hate goes.
Good for her if she’s laughing all the way to the bank. Serves us right.
