Just after 10am ET this morning, the Susan G. Komen For The Cure released an announcement changing their funding criteria for grants to fight breast cancer. The announcement came after strong response by women online and off, for and against the news that Susan G. Komen was ending funding to Planned Parenthood. BlogHer has reached out to the Komen foundation for an interview, and understands that their offices have been flooded with calls for comment. We will keep reaching out to Susan G. Komen and will report back once we reach them for further comment.

Here is the full text of the statement:

Statement from Susan G. Komen Board of Directors and Founder and CEO Nancy G. Brinker

We want to apologize to the American public for recent decisions that cast doubt upon our commitment to our mission of saving women's lives.

The events of this week have been deeply unsettling for our supporters, partners and friends and all of us at Susan G. Komen. We have been distressed at the presumption that the changes made to our funding criteria were done for political reasons or to specifically penalize Planned Parenthood. They were not.

Our original desire was to fulfill our fiduciary duty to our donors by not funding grant applications made by organizations under investigation. We will amend the criteria to make clear that disqualifying investigations must be criminal and conclusive in nature and not political. That is what is right and fair.

Our only goal for our granting process is to support women and families in the fight against breast cancer. Amending our criteria will ensure that politics has no place in our grant process. We will continue to fund existing grants, including those of Planned Parenthood, and preserve their eligibility to apply for future grants, while maintaining the ability of our affiliates to make funding decisions that meet the needs of their communities.

It is our hope and we believe it is time for everyone involved to pause, slow down and reflect on how grants can most effectively and directly be administered without controversies that hurt the cause of women. We urge everyone who has participated in this conversation across the country over the last few days to help us move past this issue. We do not want our mission marred or affected by politics—anyone's politics.

Starting this afternoon, we will have calls with our network and key supporters to refocus our attention on our mission and get back to doing our work. We ask for the public's understanding and patience as we gather our Komen affiliates from around the country to determine how to move forward in the best interests of the women and people we serve.

We extend our deepest thanks for the outpouring of support we have received from so many in the past few days and we sincerely hope that these changes will be welcomed by those who have expressed their concern.

you know @Stacy before i even read the comments, i just want to say how happy this makes me that Komen decided to reverse it's decision and not pull funding unless it's a criminal investigation. i sure hope the reactions from people will be positive. we have to keep in mind all the lives that both organizations save and stop being critical to both of them. and, we must be kinder to each other who differ in opinion.

I am so glad that they have reconsidered and made a criminal inquiry basis to suspend funding. Both of these organization save lives!! Remember that (i'm not reading the comments...i'm not!) saving lives is what this is all about. 1 in 8 women get breast cancer. chances are if you are reading this you will be touched directly by the disease and now you know that both planned parenthood and susan g komen will give you direction to get the care you need. amen, i'm putting this to bed.

I agree.....send you money to PP designate the funding....and buy a pink bottle on your own with no affiliation to anyone's cause but your own!

At 18, I sent Planned Parenthood a donation. I wish I had made it an annual thing, as it makes me sad to think of how much I could have given them over the past twelve years. But since 2005 I have gone to them for my annual exam and use them for birth control. This whole thing with Komen has also made me recommit to an annual donation to PP, the first of which I did this morning.

Komen saying it wasn't political is BS. The "under investigation" rule was clearly designed to be able to defund Planned Parenthood. I mean, hello, Komen gave money to PENN STATE but only PP had its grant taken away.

If you want to continue funding Komen, that is entirely your call. But please note the "pinkwash" effect is out of control and helping nobody, least of all breast cancer victims and survivors. If you REALLY want to help out an organization you support, I urge you to do it with your wallet by sending them a check instead of purchasing a pink water bottle.

The VP is a liar. The original decision was personal and political and now they are trying to clean up her mess. This statement "...reflect on how grants can most effectively and directly be administered without controversies that hurt the cause of women." alludes that she thinks PP hurts women when ALL they do is support them. Also, since they continue to believe that they own the word 'cure' and sue smaller org that DARE try to raise money for diseases other than breast cancer WITH DONOR MONEY, I will NOT support them at all.

Thanks Angel! I disagree that they get an A+ in crisis management. Planned Parenthood broke this story and Komen was woefully unprepared for what was going to happen. Their PR folks deserve no kudos for this at all.

As a long time supporter of SGK, the damage is done, as far as I'm concerned. We'll donate/fundraise for organizations whose focus remains on healthcare and prevention.

Yes, now that the light is shining on SGK, the roaches are scuttling for cover. Too little, too late. Their position on stem cell research - that might actually FIND a cure for cancer, their exec salaries, their bullying and lawsuits against smaller organizations, their pinkwashing of everything from KFC buckets to chips & soda... Lots of people now see them for what they are. Not another dime, there are many other worthy organizations. This PR turnaround isn't about helping women - except those worried they might lose their hefty salaries at SGK.

Angel--thanks for the information. Komen has pissed me off for a long time and now I'm glad there is an alternative.

I stopped supporting SGK awhile ago after learning about their "administrative costs". I do support PP.

Natalie, check out the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. For every dollar raised, $.90 of it goes towards grants or research programs. That's much better than SGK Foundation, where their administrative overhead is incredibly bloated, which is why I stopped sending money to them a while ago.

I've always hated this business I will not call the money making machine of living off your dead sister a charity this just makes me look down on them more. Woman never have other woman's back no wonder men think of us as the lesser sex

I don't support neither of these charities! SGK may have started with good intentions, but money talks now. I'm not even going to mention the evils within Planned Parenthood, please research!

No thanks. While we are on the subject, can someone recommend other breast cancer charities for me to consider? I've been meaning to find one for quite a while.

Whoops. I meant to type "stop FUNDING stem cell research.

Agree with the others in that this decision is too little, too late. If you're going to make a decision, stand by it and ride out the storm. Now, all sides are given SGK Foundation the side-eye. Their credibility took a bigger hit today then it did earlier this week.

I hope Planned Parenthood says, "Thanks, but no thanks," to the reinstated funding, especially since it's not guaranteed for the future.

Tracey Murnane
Tracey Murnane

It speaks of PR damage control. They've crossed a line the foundation can never recover from. What's also missing from this discussion is the lesser known decision they made to stop defunding stem cell research. Also, since this hypocritical decision was made, further research shows that they continue to fund other organizations "under investigation". If they want their organization to be politically motivated say so, don't try to shovel shit onto the heads of rational people that see their actions for what they are, politically religious agendas.

I didn't know about the community manager but I know that at least 2 other high level officials for the company resigned or planned to resign due to the decision. I question whether they caved to pressure from the larger community or from their internal one. The statement doesn't guarantee PP anything, really. I stand by both my long standing decision not to donate to Komen and by my belief that people who are anti-choice are also anti-woman.

Komen's community programs manager resigned in December when this was first decided. I think that speaks volumes.

If you're going to make a decision, own it! I feel like they caved because of the backlash, yet didn't let the good that could have come out of that decision come to the forefront.

too little, too late. their attitude and % of money actually given for research is all out in public now - and doesn't look too good!

Tiffiny Harmer Felix

I agree with Anne. What a stupid, stupid move to begin with. I find it hard to believe that no one at Susan G. Komen could see the backlash that would be the result. Or, no one listened to the person who could see it coming...

Robin Black
Robin Black

Not impressed. They've already shown they're now politically motivated, and the reversal is only for "existing grants," with no promise at ALL to fund future grants to PP. Sorry, my money will be going to other, better breast cancer organizations who are sincere about helping women.
