Kwajalyn Brown Is Back in Prime Time on Tyler Perry's Top Drama
By Mia Jackson on August 26, 2014
Kwajalyn Brown will be back next season on Tyler Perry’s The Haves and the Have Nots, an Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN) original series. The Atlanta-based actress is set to return in her role as the gritty, relentless journalist determined to get to the truth. Kwajalyn is as thrilled to continue in Perry’s tight-knit cast as when she first landed the role. “I’ve learned so much working at Tyler Perry Studios with this amazing cast! They are a really tight-knit group of professionals who welcomed and encouraged me from day one.”
The Haves and the Have Nots is set in an opulent fictional mansion in Savannah, Georgia, a city that Kwajalyn has come to know well. In 2011, she was cast as Theresa Gant in First City Film's Untouched, an independent project that took the real Savannah by storm this summer. Filmed entirely in the southern city, Brown’s character was a clear audience favorite at the July 29th big screen premiere at Lucas Theatre. The film could be making its way to Lifetime.
Kwajalyn, a Jacksonville, FL native, can also be seen in a web series that tickles the funny bone, mixing the macabre with humor. On August 31st, she will join creator V. Elizabeth Stacy and other cast members from Zombie Socks Episode 4: Piranha Bowl for a screening in her home city at the Dragon Con Independent Film Festival. It's not her first time on a show dealing with that special mix of genres. Brown had a recurring role as Judge Tara Flint in Lifetime's Drop Dead Diva. Whenever there’s the opportunity to expand and try something new, Kwajalyn is all for it, especially when it means more roles and chances for women of color.
While Hollywood was on full display at last night’s Emmy Awards, the lack of diversity among the winners was glaring. There's an upside. Black actresses are finding success in independent films like Untouched and the critically-acclaimed Netflix series Orange is the New Black. In the week leading to the televised awards, Uzo Aduba took home the Emmy for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series for her role as Suzanne aka Crazy Eyes. Though it was not televised, her dedicated followers enjoyed her enthusiasm and excitmement. The diverse OITNB cast of professionally trained, talented actresses should help open the door for more thespians of color, as will Perry’s drama on OWN which has found its eager fans.
The Have and the Have Nots season-ending episode ranked #1 cable original dramatic series for adults aged 18-49 and is a huge hit among all women. New episodes begin airing on January 6, 2015.
Kwajalyn isn’t focused on what’s next – she’s enjoying what’s now. Fans, however, can’t wait to see just what the screen holds for her in the future. There's no doubt she will be incredible.
