Minivans vs SUVS: Are Automatic Doors Really Life-Changing?

Chevrolet Venture: Minivans Are Too Common! My sister-in-law, recently in the market for a new vehicle, posed this question on her Facebook page: Leave me your opinions about minivans vs. SUVs.

The response was shocking. More than 80 (!) posts came in from her friends and family touting the fabulousness of both minivans and SUVs.

Now I have posted on my own Facebook page about life altering subjects: the dangers of synthetic food dye, the toxicity of high fructose corn syrup. I’ve posted articles about current events and celebrities. And never once have I received this kind of passionate and fiery response from so many people at one time. What’s going on here? Mothers keep quiet about pesticide use, Sarah Palin and world peace but open a big can of “my minivan is better than your SUV” when the opportunity arises? (Don’t worry; there was plenty of “My SUV will run over your minivan” talk as well. Really.)

I have several ideas about what’s going on in the world of moms to inspire such lively debate over family vehicles.

  • Minivan moms have been lulled into a false sense of reality that life is super easy thanks to push button sliding doors. (I actually had a friend call her remote control doors “life-changing.” She meant it. And I believe her. But not enough to get my own.
  • While minivan moms have given up, er, given in, to all that is “motherly,” SUV moms might sadly be clinging to a younger, cooler version of themselves. The only way to convince themselves they’ve still got it is to threaten to run over your Sienna. It’s nothing personal.
  • Minivans are more fun to name than SUVs.
  • It’s sort of hilarious to picture the most macho dad you know driving a minivan. I’m not sure why this is, but I dare you not to laugh.
  • Parents may be hoping beyond hope that an SUV will prevent their family vehicle from the fate of the minivan seen in the popular video “Mom My Ride.”

It’s true as my sister-in-law’s uncle told her: “A car doesn’t make you cool or uncool.” It doesn’t. But when you spend as much time in one as a mom does, you better make sure you like it. (My sister-in-law went with the Honda Odyssey, by the way. She’s learning to accept it by playing with the remote control doors and chanting, “This is only temporary.”)

Brooke Bernard is also in the market for a bigger family vehicle, and she’s leaning toward an SUV with captain’s chairs. Feel free to leave a comment here about why she will or will not ruin her life making the decision to forego the minivan. For more Brooke Bernard check out http://www.mamasagainstdrama.com.

I ditched the minivan for a Subaru Forrester a decade ago. Sure the kids have to SIT NEXT TO EACH OTHER...but well...after two minivans, I wanted a wagon. I ended up with the Forrester after some love at first sight thing. Now we have a Prius and yes, the kids still sit crammed next to each other. No problem.

Granted, we had to rent a vehicle last weekend to carry all seven of us. But, in the past forever period of time--no need. Rarely do we have more than three kids in the car with the two of us.

I am right now in an SUV...granted a small one-but I dream about automatic doors

I can't say a bad word about mini vans, they do rock some great accessories BUT I am a true truck mom. But when trucks are not the best option to carry multiple people and cargo in the rain, a SUV has to do. I love my Big Blue and will only trade her in for a new Camero Z28. That can fit 9 people, a football bag and snack cooler for the team, right?

As for pesticides in our food and air, I wish more moms were savvy to what is going on. We would a change for sure in what we eat as a nation. Moms do not realize the power they have buy just going to the supermarket.

Fun article to read!

This just in: Our family now owns an Acadia. As close as you can get to the minivan inside but still an SUV on the outside. Alas, I will never truly know if the auto doors are life-changing. I'll have to take your word for it. Thanks for reading!! Follow me on Twitter @BrookeBBlogs

My Ford Windstar with VCR hookup and auto open door I have called the Momma Van. I can ride children in the back with good shoulder harnesses and it is roomy and comfortable, seats you can sleep in, drink holders kind of comfortable

Do I love it? Yes for its front lumbar adjustable seat (I have a bad cervical spine condition) and being at a higher elevation on the road is more comfortable and allows better viewing of the road.. The air/heat vents at all seat locations, the tinted rear windows..need I say more.

It is not cool looking and 'totally' dull to my teenage son at this point, but for awhile...

Time to upgrade..I will miss her.

My husband has given in to every little thing my heart desires, but he won't budge on a minivan. We had to go the SUV with a 3rd row route - and as much as I love it....I still feel the need for space. I love how roomie the newer minivans are with the captain chairs and all of the cargo room. I adore the different climate controlled zones and yes - I want the automatic sliding doors. But it just isn't in the cards for me......so when I see, a few times a year, a friend on facebook post pics of her new vehicle and welcome herself into the minivan world....I do have a twinge of guilt. Good luck Brooke in whatever you decide to purchase and please review and let us know how you like it - I am sure you will have a zany and fun story or two to share.

Noooo! Every time someone posts the pros of a minivan it makes me consider one again -- just for a minute! I'll let you know what we decide. Thanks for reading!

We had a CRV, an Expedition and now a Toyota Corolla. Guess which is my favorite and I wish I'd started with. The Corolla is lower to the ground so it's easier for little ones to get in and out. When they were babies, bending over to get them in their car seats might have been tough but I think the gas mileage would have won me over. Trunk is spacious for the size of the car and if it's too tiny, the Camry is bigger with still great fuel efficiency, resale value, and dependability. There's a reason why the Corolla is one of the best-selling cars for decades. : ) (however, I also think it is the most boring looking car in the world. lol)

BBernard 11 pts

LucindaA I hear what you're saying! Our problem continues to be the need to pick up friends and cousins to go places with our family. Plus we can't carpool -- other families can take our kids places, but we can't ever return the favor.

I always thought a mini-van would be the kiss of death to my vw coolness... until I had 2 kids and found it incredibly difficult to fit them and all of their ever necessary accompaniments! (Yes, I have 2 kids that seldom leave the house without a bag of some sort FILLED with things to do in the car... even for a 15 minute ride!!) I've held on to my jetta thus far, but inevitably, the mini is coming & honestly... I feel okay with that! Totally loved the comment that it's more about a phase of my life & not my definition!

BBernard 11 pts

AWalsh My kids can't go anywhere without car entertainment in the form of books, dollar toys, whatever. I'm glad I'm not alone in that either!

I don't want a minivan because it makes me sad that I won't have a big enough family to fill it. So we're an SUV family. Or, because this is Ohio, our other vehicle is a full cab truck. Oh yeah. Represent!

BBernard 11 pts

JennaHatfield Aw. You made me sad then made me laugh in one little comment post! I can honestly say I do not feel sad that I do not have five kids. Not sad at all. Our two kids will fill up any vehicle we choose with the sounds of their voices alone. :) Mothers of five children are genetically wired in a way that I am CLEARLY not! More power to them -- and their vans!

Mama One to Three 6 pts

I am clinging desperately to a younger cooler version of myself. (BTW I was never cool when I was young.) we have an SUV. I think a minivan would be much easier with three carseats in the back!

BBernard 11 pts

Mama One to Three That's why we're looking at the SUVs with the captains' chairs center and the bench in the back. Like a mini on the inside but an SUV on the outside!

hjurgens 5 pts

Try the Highlander. I've had one for the past 3 years, and have been really happy with it. Not a ton of room in the trunk when the 3rd row is up, but enough for groceries or a thin stroller (but not both)

TheLazyChristian 5 pts

We recently bought a Mazda5 which is NOT a minivan---it's a sport wagon. Even though it has sliding doors. It's smaller than a minivan, but bigger than a regular car, but it's not an SUV. I really don't want to be a minivan mama---but my friends make fun of my sport wagon and call it a minivan!

BBernard 11 pts

TheLazyChristian Those minivan moms are just trying to make themselves feel better! :) (I'm kidding, minivanners. Please don't send me hate mail!)

ltorres78 5 pts

There was no way I was going to get a minivan, but I can tell you that my friends who do have them LOVE them. It must be magic of some sort, because they can fit 87 people inside, along with all of your luggage AND a double stroller. But still not a selling point for me.

BBernard 11 pts

ltorres78 I am so on board with this opinion! I just can't get my mind past the "minivan" part. Maybe I'm shallow? But I can live with it. :)

shuggilippo 5 pts

I'm a younger mom with only one child so naturally I leaned toward a crossover. I will never own a minivan, no matter the bells and whistles. Plus I live in SUV Suburbia, USA.

allierambles 6 pts

shuggilippo You must be my neighbor, I live in SUV Suburbia. But that is not the reason I have one. I like trucks and it's the next best thing for a truck lovin mom.

SHarsh 6 pts

I must admit, the sliding doors are life changing! I really could not have imagined a sliding door being that big of a change in my life. However, 3 days after owning my minivan I stopped to pick up dry cleaning. Somewhere between balancing my one-year-old on my hip, a preschoolers hand in my hand, my wallet under my arm, the dry cleaning in another hand with my keys (no, I'm not an octopus, this was really done with 2 arms / hands), I understood the "life-changing" sliding doors!
Great article and very controversial indeed!

BBernard 11 pts

Thanks, @SHarsh! You make a strong argument. But maybe if I get the SUV I'll be content to simply not know what I'm missing. And I've only got 2 kids, so that's a bonus for me. Thanks for reading!

victorias_view 121 pts moderator

If I had to chose it would be an SUV only because I like the durability of handling rocky roads and my skis look good on top :O

BBernard 11 pts

victorias_view Ha! Good points! It's a surprisingly tough decision!

victorias_view 121 pts moderator

BBernard It is a very tough decision! You want to purchase a vehicle that holds it value, is dependable, and lasts a long time. So you really do have to think about your options...

Like both. If you live in a place with snow, the higher clearance of a SUV is wonderful. Both can carry lots of kids and gear. I have 3 dogs and my only complaint about an SUV is it is VERY difficult to get an older big dog to hop into the back of an SUV because it is higher off the ground. (I end up having to lift one in or have the enter the 2nd row passenger seats) Most vans are a lower profile and it is easier for a dog to hop in.

@Margaret: Third row rear facing seat? They still make those? I'm actually car sick just thinking about it! :)

Neither. Refuse to drive either. I fit a family a 5 in my Mazda 3 sporty sedan. 3 five point harness carseats all in a row in the back. Hubby has the Ford Flex "Daddy Wagon" for the weekend jaunts.

SUV (or mini SUV, which is what I have)....to each his/her own, as they say..

Neither: I have a wagon with a third row rear facing seat--I can seat as many as the mini-van I had previously, it gets better mileage, and it's easier to park. It's a win all around for me. :)

I have a monster, The Lord of the Screaming Eagle, and if you see it you'd know why.
I like the room, and how high up it is. I hate feeling like I'm practically sliding my butt only inches from the road. Plus, it's easier for my disabled husband to get into.

Have had both. On my second minivan. Gets better gas mileage ,easier to get in& out of. Space to walk thru to get in back instead of climbing over seats. More space for separating kids (stop touching me). Love my Dodge Caravan never had any problems. I live in desert of AZ so very Hot summers. Great to have dual AC. Great with DVD and auto doors are the Best. Said I would get another even if I won lottery.

SUV for me!! I like the view :) and with an automatic lift gate, it's very similar to automatic doors ;)

We have a wagon, but we can't fit our nieces or nephews or any of the kids' friends in it. And therein lies the problem. I also can't carpool to the elementary school with any other families.

Sliding doors are a life saver. But we call our Mazda 5 "the MAV" - multi activity vehicle ;)

Neither. Both are gas guzzlers. Take up parking spaces and put more wear on roads. Try a sedan or wagon

Leann McQueen Bauer

I have had both. The minivan is the better fit for my family at this time. It seats eight people, uses less gas than most SUVs, is easier for little ones to get in and out of and easier to park. While I am certainly not my vehicle, it represents the phase of life I am currently in...and I accept it with open arms! Swagger Wagons...don't knock it 'till you've tried it! ;-)
