Now that we've all heard, seen, read, written, Flickr'd, and Twittered our way through BlogHer '07 (whew!), you bet it's time to start looking ahead to BlogHer '08. First order of business? Announcing its location. So without further ado, let me say that yes -- you have heard the rumors and they are true: BlogHer '08 is going to be taking place...

...somewhere!

The truth is, BlogHer '08 is still without a home, though not for long.

We polled you, and we've taken your feedback to heart. We've investigated your top contenders. Now it's up to you to help us make our final decision. So please, tell us what you think, keeping in mind a few things:

  • The information we're providing is as accurate and detailed as possible, but it is still preliminary.
  • We are aiming to host the event on the last weekend of July, as we have done every year.
  • Your overwhelming feedback from BlogHer '07 is that the programming should take place in the same venue as the sleeping rooms -- you really want an all-in-one solution!

Read below for details about our leading options, then vote.

Note that voting ends Monday, September 10.

* * * *
Option One: San Francisco

Pros:
San Francisco came in as your top choice for location, so that's a big check in the "pro" column. It is, of course, a beautiful city with plenty going on. All potential event venues would be in the center of the city, and provide easy access to and from SF attractions.

Cons:
Because San Francisco is both small and charming, it is expensive -- and our options of venue (especially if BlogHer Conferences keep growing) are limited. It's also looking like we would have to move the conference up by one week (to the second-to-last weekend in July).

Bottom Line:
For a Fri - Sun in July, the best available room rates look like they'll be $209 - $239/night.

* * *

Option Two: Silicon Valley / Outside San Francisco proper

Pros:
Going 30 minutes (or so) outside of San Francisco means bigger venues, greater availabilities, and much more affordable room rates. Most nearby cities have attractions all their own, and offer myriad options for transportation into and out of SF for those who are inclined.

Cons:
The downside is that if we're outside of San Francisco, we're outside of San Francisco. Even if it's easy to get to SF, it won't be at your front door.

Bottom Line:
Spacious options, great availability, and room rates are only about $120/night!

* * *

Option Three: Boston

Pros:
The big BlogHer Conference has never taken place on the East Coast before, and could potentially attract a whole new group of bloggers. Plus, many of you expressed that you never otherwise have an opportunity to travel to this historic city (which is perhaps why it came in right on the heels of San Francisco as top choice of locale). Boston is also a small city, and easily accessible, plus it's very close to the airport.

Cons:
Just like San Francisco, getting to and staying in Boston is expensive. And again, we will likely have to move the event by a weekend.

Bottom Line:
Boston is probably just a little cheaper than San Francisco, at about $199/night.

* * * *

Option Four: Las Vegas

Pros:
The meeting and event capital of the US (if not the world), Vegas can fit us, and can do it a lot cheaper. Plus there'd be all those "What happens at BlogHer stays at BlogHer" buttons.

Cons:
Vegas does not host meetings on weekends! ANY option we go with would require a mid-week stay, where the bulk of the conference would be Mon-Wed or Tues-Thurs...not so great for the work week!

Bottom Line:
Some of the nicest hotels on the strip are available for room rates of $149, but only if we agree to go mid-week.

* * * *
Voting has closed.

We are eager to hear what you think, and encourage you to pass this on to readers/potential attendees. Click the link to add the poll to your blog, or just include the URL: http://www.micropoll.com/akira/MicroPoll?mode=html&id=51692

Great spacios venues and lots of hotels, indeed.

This is the mecca of where Tech companies where conceived; blogging programs are included as one of them. It's only fitting to have it here!

I know this is late, but I'd figure I'd give it a shot. Please pick SF! For The the diversity, the beauty, the free-thinkers, and not to mention the good eats! Please!

Normally I'd say BOSTON in a heartbeat b/c well...the heart lives there and all. But so expensive! I've never been to Vegas, and figure we can find some fun there!

Grrrr, I would have voted, but I just got no less than 7 posts in my Google Reader from BlogHer today. 7 days past the deadline to vote. Technology, can't live without it, can't live with it!!!

PLEASE Come East and yes, keep it over a weekend.

Can't wait to hear!

San Francisco is always a good time, as is Vegas, but being from Southern California, those are two locations I have seen enough of for a couple of lifetimes. Plus, once you've gone to Union or the Casinos, pricing isn't any different. The historic sites as well as the cosmopolitan side of Bean Town are too attractive to resist!

Instead of looking at dream destinations, I think you should choose whichever city wants bloggers to come and tout their virtues enough to give you incentives which can lower the fees enough to balance the travel, which will increase attendance and boost numbers, so the following year even more cities want Blogher, and then they tell two friends, and so on, and so on.

Too bad Atlanta was dropped. Seems like a good middle ground, and flights are usually cheap.

No matter where the conference is held, it's going to be conveniently located for some, and an inconvenient, expensive trip for others. Either coast will be more expensive the the midwest, and while the middle of the country is more central and therefore more 'fair,' I reluctantly agree with those who are saying that since BlogHer has already been TWICE on the west coast and once in the middle, perhaps it's time to give the east coast its turn. Either coast means a really expensive airline ticket for someone, whereas in the middle of the country, nobody has to spring for a ticket that costs quite as much.

My budget is such that any upscale location is beyond my reach, (where I live, a fancy convention costs about 50 bucks a night) I also understand that most BlogHer participants aren't in my shoes (and aren't you all fortunate! My shoes are old and dowdy!) so this doesn't seem to be a problem with many of you. Lucky!!!

I'm going to try to be there, wherever it is, but the prices are certainly a problem for me, and the prices of both coasts are really, really HIGH. Coupled with airline costs, BlogHer is not something us po' folks can easily manage.

Isn't there any cheaper venue, anywhere? Must it be high-end?

Just my thoughts.

And really, it doesn't make a difference to me where it's held, I'll still be saving my money for BlogHer '08 no matter where it ends up taking place, but...

In reading "She's A Geek," I came across the essay written by Wendy Seltzer, where she talks about the time conflict of Defcon being held the same weekend as BlogHer 2005 - in Vegas.

That prompted me to look online for Defcon and this year, it was held in Vegas on August 3-5. So, what gives with Vegas saying that they don't do conferences on weekends???

I realize that Defcon attracts a huge crowd, but given that BlogHer has steadily increased in attendance, wouldn't someone in Vegas be willing to take on a conference that is clearly growing in popularity?

Again, I'll go no matter where it's held. I just found this curious.

I'm self-employed, so the mid-week timing is not a problem for me, but I realize I'm probably in the minority here. But, for what it's worth, I wanted to get my vote in for LV.

Maybe I'm a big baby, but whatever. I went there once, also for a conference. Logistically speaking, getting anywhere on the strip with deadlines and time frames was a pain...especially since I wasn't in the conference hotel. It's just too big for me.

I'm not a fan of cheese, either, and not many places are more cheesy, as far as I'm concerned. Any economy on rooms, flights, etc. is more than made up for with the extra cost of EVERYTHING ELSE. If I go someplace like this, especially for BlogHer, I don't want to go on a mad budget. I found any decent food to be quite expensive for what you got, and drinks were crazy expensive. And hello...Vegas. July. Inferno. Distracting, huge, inferno.

But then again, BlogHer always takes care of us, so I'm not that picky. And as an East Coaster who's traveled to CA and Chicago for the past two years for the conference, I can guarantee there are women on this side of the country who'd be much more likely to come if it didn't involve a cross-country trip. I love San Francisco and might try to make that pricey trip, but that last reason is why Boston got my vote. I think it's a great city besides.

Boston is extremely handicap accessible. Anyone in a chair or with a handicap that requires special transportation can use THE RIDE, which is part of the MBTA, to take them anywhere in the city and suburbs for $2/ride.

The convention centers are all on the waterfront, and thus they are somewhat isolated from the city without some walking. However, there is South Station only a few blocks up and you can catch the subway or commuter rail. There are plenty of cabs hanging out. This, you don't have to stay in the most expensive hotels, but could find rooms in different parts of the city for less money.

Lastly, there are some really excellent restaurants in the area of the convention centers, so remember to bring your lobster bib.

That said, Vegas is cheap, convenient, easy to get in and out of, etc. amen. I wouldn't go to Boston, too much $$$. Vegas? Yeah, I'd go. But SF, ah, that's a destination!

Anywhere in the Bay Area would be great. Easy to get in and out of (3 major airports) and I love the weather. Plus, like you said, the Penninsula or even San Jose isn't nearly as expensive. Anything in Oakland? I remember there is a hotel/conference center downtown...sorry, just don't remember the name! Hyatt? Hilton?
Thanks for posting the vote! Looking forward to the results :)

It almost killed me financially to go to Chicago. For most Canadians, anywhere in the middle of the USA is pricey for flights, it is not really driving distance from anywhere, and it is expensive! I guess we will find out today, but god help me if it is boston, i may have to skip it this year. It isn't like we increased out number of attendees by making it in Chicago. I wish that cost was a bigger factor here. I know it is an issue for a lot of blogHers.

I agree with other commenters that it would be nice to give the East Coast bloggers a chance to have the venue closer to them. After two West Coast and one MidWest venue, it's the East Coast's turn!

I also vehemently agree with SoCalMom-PLEASE keep it over a weekend. It's hard enough for my husband to get that Friday and Monday off of work as it is.

I'm being selfish here, but it's a great place to have a conference.... easy access via the worlds busiest airport (albeit there are some minor /cough/ delays from time to time).

Lots of conference facilities, reasonable prices....

I'm not sayin', I'm just sayin.....

Boston would be tremendous. I think there are so many East Coast bloggers that don't make it to the west coast BlogHer conferences for the same reason that West Coast bloggers wouldn't be able to make it to the east. It would be so nice to be able to be included. Oh please let it be Boston. (does it sound like I'm begging? cause I'm really not above doing that at all if necessary...) :)

This would be my first BlogHer. I'm game for anything. I like the Vegas idea because it's closer to me and I could drive. But I've never been to Boston. And I have relatives in San Francisco to stay with.........

SocalMom 5 pts

As a mom without any outside help, I have appreciated having it over weekends in the summer. It would just be so much more difficult if I was away for any length of time midweek.

I understand the need to move it around and applaud that ideal. But as the expense of going to Chicago was what kept me from BlogHer 07, I would love to see '08 back in the West.

When I was a meeting planner for a state trade association, we would alternate our big conference year to year between Northern and Southern California cities. You may need to do that, too. That said, you've had two on the West Coast -- one in the Midwest -- so I guess it's the East Coast's turn (I guess we're not counting BlogHer for Business).

I think Vegas would give us some seriously good material to write about! And the cost is usually pretty good (if you don't gamble). Also, there are so many options for evening activities. I'd vote Vegas in a heartbeat!

Boston does tend to be pricey but is worth the money in the long run. A) I'd be able to go....which isn't even close to a choice at any of the other options...and b) I do think you'll get a whole new group of women who are East Coasters. Having it over a weekend would also be a plus....as a teacher...I can't get any of that extra time off :)

Plus...Boston has Fenway....the beautiful coast....great night life...and obnoxious people :)

Lovebabz 5 pts

Sassymonkey I likes that button slogan! I would add with pictures too. I live in CT so Boston is just aroad trip. And Vegas during the week maybe a drag--but it might be worth doing and then folks could hang out for the weekend. I am saving my pennies NOW!

Love,

sassymonkey 6 pts

And the fact that we're all bloggers means that the buttons for Vegas should say "What happens in Vegas goes on my blog"?

I like the cost of Vegas and it's always possible to find cheap flights there, even from Canada, but it's the middle of the week thing that is throwing me off. In my current situation that's not a big deal in the slightest but who knows what any of us will be doing a year from now?

So Boston got my vote because it's close and it's generally possible that I might be able to talk someone into driving. I figure I have a year to work on it right???

I've been thinking about this, and I wanted to jump on and say that this was a great post. It gave us insight into the factors of the decision and the pros and cons. For example, I was all "Vegas, Baby!" until I heard that it couldn't be a weekend - major cold water over the head.

I voted for Boston because I'd love to meet an East Coast contigent, AND I see that there's a HI Boston hostel... Plus, I've never been to Boston.

I'd be happy with San Fran as well, since I can drive there.

Finally, I'm thinking you should pick 2008 AND 2009 and then let us vote two years ahead in the future. Seems like we would benefit from getting ahead of that curve.
