Last Night's GOP Debate: The Loser Might Have Been the Media
Last night's GOP debates at the Reagan Library saw 2012 Republican presidential contenders Rick Perry, Newt Gingrich, Mitt Romney, Michele Bachmann, Rick Santorum and Jon Huntsman air their positions on issues including Social Security (which Perry called "a Ponzi scheme"), job creation, education, health care, climate change and immigration.
Watching the debate, conservative blogger Betsy Newmark pointed out a theme she saw throughout the debate: The opinions of the media hosts coming out in their questions. She noted,
The best moment of the debate was Newt Gingrich telling Brian Williams and John Harris that he wasn't interested in helping them drive a wedge between Republicans. A lot of the questions were inviting one candidate to criticize another Republican candidate. Mostly, they wanted to have the other Republicans bash either Romney or Perry. It made having Gingrich up there on the stage worth it.
