Lessons Learned from Your First Job Ever

Think back... way back in time (or maybe not so far back depending on your age...) -- what was your first-ever job like? What did you learn?
Recently I was thinking back to when I was 16 and decided I just had to get a job. My parents discouraged me from getting one (I didn't need the money as they were adamant that my education was my main job)...and yet like a bonehead I figured I "should". All my friends had one and in some stressed teenage way I felt I had to earn my keep. More on that "not good enough" story another time... So, off I went looking for a part-time job.
So my first job was working at a gas station in a lousy, deserted part of my small hometown. I had to work all alone until late at night (10 or 11pm) and close up by myself. In fact the place was so grungy and lonely, I had to lock the front door to the store if I had to go to the restroom. It was the pits... strange customers, crappy convenience foods to inventory, and bitter coffee to brew. It was boring and scary at the same time. I became friends with the local police and male friends who could come and just hang around for a bit. I was young, stupid, and trying to do the thing that was expected of me (but expected by whom? My parents wanted me to NOT have the job...). Oh the early ways we reinforce illusory stories we tell ourselves about what we should or shouldn't do and then we live our lives by these fictional tales that play in our head like a crazymaking tape.
What did I learn?
- Don't listen to the nonsensical tapes in your head.
- Be VERY aware of your surroundings and how to read other people.
- Your well-being and safety is more important than rules or money.
- Don't do something just because you feel you "should" or someone told you to.
- Doing something only for the money is never a wise decision.
Recently Denise Tanton posed a question on Facebook - How old were you when you had your first job? Well the conversation went wild with over 50 responses fast. So this is the conversation I want to get rolling here... I want you to chime in with the good, the bad, and the ugly. Inquiring minds want to know:
- How old were you when you had your first job?
- Did you love it or hate it?
- What was the biggest lesson you learned?
Strike it up in the comments... as this will make for a fun and interesting conversation.
