Let the Decorating Begin

It wasn't until recently that I became interested in decorating. When I was living with my sisters throughout my late teens to mid-twenties, doing anything with my apartment other than the bare minimum wasn't something that ever crossed my mind. As long as I had furniture that looked all right, a TV and computer, something on the walls...I was good to go.

Things have changed since then. I'm much more interested in how things are put together. All the options we have. Colors, fabrics, furniture, lighting.

Of course, that's all it is right now -- an interest. I'm not trying to come off as somebody with, you know, style, because then you might come to my place (or you might see photos, if I'm ever brave enough to take and post any) and think to yourself, "Who does this crazy girl think she is?"

That's the great thing about decorating, it's completely subjective. If you love something, there's a good chance I won't. Or even if I think it's okay, or interesting, it may not be something I'd ever consider putting in my home. All I know is that I've discovered I really enjoy looking at pictures of other people's homes and I use that information to inform me about what I might want to do in my own place.

I've been in my apartment for almost a month, which means I've been able to go from contemplating how I'd like to do things to actually implementing those ideas. I'm happy with my sofa and large matching armchair (bought from Craigslist for a good price). I have a 42" flat screen TV that I bought from a friend after he upgraded to a larger size. (I needed a new TV because I was tired of my huge, 11-year-old, 25" inch model, but if I had bought something brand new I probably wouldn't have splurged for the 42". It looks just fine in my space, though.)

The TV is currently sitting on the floor because the TV stand I bought, although it's been delivered, is still downstairs in my building's package-storage area. It's real wood, but it was delivered in a flat box and needs to be assembled. The box is long and heavy, so I can't transport it by myself. However, one of my guy friends has volunteered to come over, help me bring it upstairs, and assemble it, so I plan to take him up on his kind offer in the next few days.

My biggest issue right now is that there's nothing on my walls. I have one really cool print that I bought from my photographer-cousin, but I need to take it to a store that sells frames so I can buy one before I hang it up. I've looked for frames online, but I think I'd be better off looking at them in person so I can choose which color and type of frame goes best with this particular photograph.

I also purchased a bookcase. I like that it's on wheels. And yesterday I bought a really cute key holder to put on the wall next to my front door and another print to hang up, both from Etsy.

I guess what I want is what a lot of other people want: a place that's a haven for me, and a place where other people feel comfortable as well. I'm not quite there yet but I'm enjoying the journey.

Spring time also means breaking out the tool belt for me. And by tool belt I mean scissors, tape measure, fabric and fabric paint...and a victim (chair, table, desk).

I'm doing it a little bit different this year. I am starting a business that allows other furniture DIYers to promote and sell their recycled and upcycled creations.

I'm finding that they're all over the place but I would like for them to be in ONE place because the web/internet is SO overwhelming.

Help me create this place.

i love decorating my room and doing my own decorations. what i do is go window shopping, then when i find decorations or stuff that i like, i try to make it myself, though sometimes it cost more and takes time to make it myself, i really enjoy doing it. but sometimes it takes weeks for me to finish it because of lack of time.

I haven't been saving paper photos that I like, but I do have a file of electronic photos that I've found on the web. :)

Okay, so "dorm" style might be an exaggeration, but I just want to dig my teeth in and really transform it from a house to a home.  We've been here for a year now and I've made a few very minimal purchases only because I want to tackle entire rooms at a time with a hefty budget. I just recently started setting aside a certain amount from each paycheck so that I can tackle a new room about once every three months. Yay! I'm excited to get started.

By the way, one of the things I do is keep an eye out for pictures of rooms that are decorated in a style I like (catalogs are a good place for this) - I clip the pictures and use that as inspiration while I shop.

Happy decorating, everyone!

Comfort and organization are important to me.  Color is too.  After that, I have no patience, and I'm happy for friends to come over and rearrange my furniture, the photographs on the piano and the kitchen cannisters.

I always have the hardest time deciding what to put on my walls. And since I lived with a roommate the past few years and can't remember what I did with the few pieces I USED to have (which probably weren't any good anyway), I'm starting from scratch. And although I've looked at various options, nothing really screams out, "Buy me!" But I really wish it did, because it would make the decision process so much easier.

Meaning, I'd love to paint some walls in here. Because I'm allowed to paint in the apartment as long as I cover it with white again when I leave. But I've never painted walls before in my life. And what if I hate it? For me, it's easier to buy furniture and accessories than paint. I know, it's weird.

I have a huge interest in design, but have no idea whether or not I do it correctly. I recently moved in with my now husband and I have spent the better half of the last 6 months redecorating his condo and bringing it up to a style I find acceptable.

I start with a neutral color scheme for the room (my husband is no risk-taker and loves his neutrals) and then add in a splash of color.

In our livingroom I started with some different shades of brown/tan, couch, wall, lamps. And then bought a rug that ties all the hues of brown together with teal.

The last element, and the hardest for me and my husband to agree on, is photos to hang on the wall. We went with an Ansel Adams over the television in a very nice frame and have just picked out a nice shot of autumn foliage to hang in a large frame over our long couch.

How will it all look together? I have not idea but am frightened at how others will judge the completed space. I have some judge-y friends when it comes to design and I'm afraid to show them the final product for fear they will laugh in my face.

I have no eye for color, elements, ideas, etc. that go into "designing" a room or decorating it. I love HGTV, love reading decorating blogs but have no talent for doing it myself. I can copy what others do but am never sure it looks good. Of course, having hand me down furniture doesn't help matters. We're saving for a new sofa though.

We have a small older house. My kitchen still has the original avocado green laminate countertops along with the matching green stove that came with the house.

I am slowly trying to redo the house to make it nicer but it is baby steps.

We are trying. Our kitchen is in mid-semi-remodel. (Cabinets were fine. Wall color, back splash and flooring needed redone. Flooring is down, trim is to be done next week. Wall color is a huge success (dark tan, light brown). We're still arguing the backsplash issue.) So, that room has given me hope that I can do it... kinda.

Best of luck to you!

I have this fear that once I incorporate the things I want/need in my place, it still won't look like I imagine. You know, like, cool. And awesome. But I guess all I can do is try...

I have an interest in decor. I do. I want things to look nice, match/complement and generally not suck. In fact, we are in the market for a new sofa and recliner that, you know, match, since our children are out of the teething phase and thus won't wipe their noses on our couch. (Decor tip: Until your children are done teething, don't buy a new couch. Buy a slip cover. That way, when your couch gets snotted by a teething maniac, you just wash the slip cover. It's harder to throw an entire couch in the washing machine. Just sayin'.)

But, yes, I have an interest. I'm addicted to HGTV. I want nice things that look, well, nice. Or even mediocre things that look mediocre to nice.

But I have no ability. It's weird. I have an eye for photography but NOT for design. I can somewhat envision what I want but I cannot make it happen. I just can't. I feel overwhelmed with the possibilities and just shut down, mid-project. I can't even begin to imagine how long it's going to take us to pick a couch. I just can't. BAH.
