Let's Do the Time Warp Again: Glee Tackles Rocky Horror

I was born to be Magenta. Seriously. It is the one benefit to having my mop of brown curls; you brush it out, tease it up, smear on some lipstick, find a French maid outfit (make sure you wear a black bra underneath and not your normal beige one), and head out to Rocky Horror.

And for a long time running, I was Magenta. You know, like those kids who stand in the front of the theater and act out the movie, helping the audience to call out the right lines. I was pawed by more Columbias and laughed evilly with more anemic-looking Riff-Raffs than I care to remember. I was Glee before there was Glee ...

Which was why I was so excited to find out this news:

On October 26th, just in time for Halloween, Glee is covering the movie classic, leading home audiences through the time warp again. Squee!

While others debate whether or not Glee should cover a classic such as Rocky Horror (for all of the excitement on Twitter, there were still a few living in fear. For some, they don't want to see a remake of something that worked so well in all of its horrible glory the first time around. For others, they don't want to see the wholesome-ish Glee kids singing about being sweet transvestites), I am here to tell you that this is the episode that will finally make me turn on Glee.

Yes, I am a Glee virgin, and I am about to pop my Glee cherry.

I have no idea why I haven't watched Glee yet -- it certainly sounds good, and people seem to love it. I have this unfortunate habit of only watching one show at a time. A few years ago, Brothers & Sisters bumped Grey's Anatomy off the screen (sorry about that, McDreamy), and now, each show gets weighed against the Walkers. (I like to call them "my family" as in, "I'm going to watch my family" much in the same way people refer to soap operas as their "stories.") And Glee just couldn't trump Sally Field.

But I've put it on my calendar. This one time, I'm going to Gleek-out. And who knows, maybe I'll even stick around for the month of November.

I have to admit that reading some of the stuff online, I worry that I've missed the really good Glee episodes, but my love of Rocky Horror trumps all. I've listened to it in languages I don't even speak, seen it on stage numerous times, and even own a pack of Rocky Horror trading cards to prove my love.

Thoughts from Around the Internet

  • Pink is the New Blog admits that as much as he doesn't like Rocky Horror, the promo pictures are making him excited for this episode.
  • Bitten and Bound has information about the episode as well as spoilers for the season.
  • PrincessNowhere tweets that she's going to die happy due to this episode.
  • Mich1011 fears they'll butcher Rocky Horror.
  • SophiaMark sort of tweets the heart of the matter: Glee + Rocky Horror = Yay?

Will it be a yay? Is Rocky Horror sort of like chocolate where even bad Rocky Horror is still good enough (seriously, certain times of the month, you could shove year-old Christmas candies or $20/pound truffles in my pie hole and it wouldn't make any difference)? Or will they be destroying a classic? Is watching Rocky Horror in your living room even fun, or is the real pleasure in being part of a group, screaming out the lines that go between the lines?

So, how many of you are going to be seeing that light over at the Frankenstein place [call out: where do you keep your pot?], burning in the fireplace? Er ... I mean, watching Glee's October 26th Rocky Horror episode?

I thought I had missed the best too but I don't think you have... if you are worried, just go rent season 1 and start at the beginning :)

I'm not a show choir girl AT ALL. But I do love this show. I think once you get to know these characters, you will love the show too.

I have to say though that this season isn't getting the reviews of the previous 2 seasons. I do still enjoy it. Some say it's gone too commercial. I'll let you be the judge.

I really look forward to the Rocky Horror Picture Show tribute.

You'll have to let us know what you think and if you decide to watch more :)

That's true. Perhaps it will lead to a RHPS revival in theaters and the young'uns can catch it on the big screen.

I also love seeing it in other cities (and hope that this Glee episodes leads to a revival because it's out of theaters now here in DC). When I went to school in the Midwest, I immediately went to see RHPS the first week I was there because I was homesick. We have a line in DC about picking up a bagel at a Bar Mitzvah when Riff Raff takes something out of his pocket, and in the Madison movie theater, I was the only one shouting out that line. Totally embarrassed, but so was the person who asked the theater, "what's a bagel?"

I'm totally afraid that many of Glee's younger viewers won't get the reference. I'm 28 and though I love RHPS, there are plenty in my generation who probably haven't ever seen it. And I'm pretty sure that a good portion of the Millennials will have no clue what's going on.

I'm kinda peeved, though. I saw a promo shot that looks like they're having Mercedes play Dr. Frank N Furter. Love her, but I don't think she can pull it off.

The Rocky Horror Picture Show is about participating and making it your own. I'm really looking forward to seeing how Glee does it, same as I always enjoyed going to the midnight movie in cities other than my own and seeing how it was done there.

Everyone who ever got dressed up for the movie brought a little something different. I'm not afraid of RHPS getting "butchered" because seriously, we've all been butchering.... ermmm... improvising with... it for over 30 years now.

I will admit to having seen RHPS around 50 times at the Biograph Theater in Chicago in the late '70s. My big fun was helping other people with their costumes even more so than dressing up myself, even though I did show up as Janet or a Transylvanian now and then.

It's just a jump to the left...!

I'm sure people already have weekly Glee parties, but this is an episode that just screams "watch it with a crowd!"

It is a movie that begs for audience participation. I was thinking of having people over to watch the Glee episode so we could shout things out. That theater experience sounds creepy and perfect :-)

I've only watched Glee a few times. It's fun, & if they manage to prompt a younger generation to discover Broadway musicals & Rocky Horror, more power to them. ; )

I saw Rocky Horror with a group from my dorm during Frosh Week in the fall of 1980. We had a special showing at a rickety old movie theatre on notorious north Main Street in Winnipeg. It wasn't midnight -- that section of town was scary enough in broad daylight, lol. It was quite an interesting sight, all of us in full Rocky Horror getup, stepping around the winos on the sidewalk. And let's just say the theatre added to the atmosphere. I remember wondering whether I should leave my feet on the floor -- I was certain a rat would run over it at any moment.

I find it hard to sit through the whole thing on TV these days without the audience participation to liven things up -- but whenever it's on, I HAVE to watch at least to the point where Tim Curry has sang "Sweet Transvestite." : )

I watched the show last season and decided I'd had enough. However, I have enough history with Rocky Horror Picture Show that I'll tune in to Glee at least one more time, just to see what they do with it.

I loved this show from the beginning. Add that the concept is based on the High School my kids went to, makes me a super fan. (The concept pitcher was a classmate of my son.) I can totally see who those kids (might) be based on. Totally.

I'm a "Rocky" fan, too. Not quite to the extent you, Milisda. I l-o-v-e the campiness.

I saw two live performances of it too and loved them. Maybe that's why I'm okay with Glee tackling it -- I've already seen it performed by others and it still works.

Closet Glee fan and RHPS fan (saw it LIVE, with toast and rice and all) so I'll be watching. Plus it's my birthday. But Who's Frank N. Furter? Kurt?
