Let's talk about jeans and boots

Boots are big this year, which is great because when the weather gets cold, boots are a nice way to dress up and stay warm.  Wear them with everything -- skirts, dresses, pants, you name it.  But no boots and cropped pants, please -- that's not a good look on anyone.

What's the strategy for wearing your boots with everything?  Simple.

Tuck and roll.  Or, more accurately, roll and tuck -- to keep your skinny jeans where they're supposed to be in your boots, cuff them first, so that they're sitting just above your ankle.  Then put your boots on and you're set.

Go wide.  If you don't want to tuck, wear your boots under your pants.  This works best with a wide leg jean or trouser, one that floats freely over the shaft of the boot.  Make sure the hem is the right length, too.

Skirt the issue.  Boots are great with a skirt, as long as the proportion is right.  Tall boots are the most versatile, at any heel hight; wear them with a short or long skirt (although the best look is knee-high boots and a knee-length skirt).

Don't save your boots for cold weather or a special occaision; wear them out and about, and dress your look up a litle.  But make sure that your boots are polished and clean, and that the soles and heels aren't wearing out.  If they are, visit the cobbler and have them taken care of.

I love my boots too! I have a closet full, but my favorite ones right now are the ones I got from this new women's boutique, Pink Tulip Clothes and Accessories (http://www.pinktulip.com ( http://www.pinktulip.com/ )). They are black so they go with just about everything. I wore them to a holiday party last weekend and everyone was commenting on how they loved them. The boutiques vibe is classic but with a modern twist. I also got a colorful mohair scarf with tiny pom-poms for on $35. It is such a fun place to shop. It reminds me of a store that you would find in mid-town Manhattan. The best part is all of the clothes and accessories are very reasonably priced.

One of the few reasons I look forward to colder weather is pulling my boots out of hiding. You have some good pointers for wearing boots, but it's essential to remember to wear trouser socks to keep pants & jeans tucked in. Tucking into the socks keeps pants stay put.

I love my leather boots with a slim heel, sinc they can be dressed up with tights and a skirt, or go underneath slacks for work.

One of my favorite finds this season was a pair of slouchy gray suede boots-- originally knee-high, but I scrunch them to just below the knee. I can wear them comfortably with jeans or leggings, and they're warm and comfortable.

The best part? $15.

I'm in Europe this year so the trends are probably a little different, but I've been seeing cropped pants with boots and leggings under shorts with boots too.  Like everywhere.

I have made my once a year splurge, last year and this year, on boots.  Last year I bought tall black boots with a medium heel and this year I went for brown suede that reach mid-calf.  They are more classic styles that I know I'll wear for years and they are waterproof and easy to walk in. La Canadienne makes some really good looking, 'winter' boots.

This fall I finally got myself a pair of tall brown boots: knee-high, dark brown leather, stacked 1-1/2 inch heel, basic equestrian-style tall boots. So versatile. I am on a super tight budget but I got mine at JCPenney and they were half off, so it was a great buy, and I adore them. I wore them in the autum with knee-length skirts (no tights) for a long time, until it got too cold. Sadly, in Minnesota it often goes from warm fall weather to four inches of snow on the ground in a matter of days, and suddenly there's really no navigating a preschool parking lot or snow-piled curb without REAL boots (i.e., snow boots). I don't want to ruin my nice brown tall boots by tromping around in snow and road salt in them! A true Minnesota mom--especially a SAHM whose days are filled with snowman-making, sledding, and ferrying toddlers to baby-gym, spends most of December, January, February, and March in jeans and snow boots, for better or for worse.

But I do still love my tall boots. They make me feel very pulled together, whether I'm wearing them with pants or skirts.

They'll fit under nearly ANY pants, which is great.

The most surprising thing to me about the return of the boot this year is that anything goes with heels -- skinny, wide, stacked, short, tall, you name it, you can wear it and look cool this year.  Same goes for the shaft -- everything from an ankle bootie to a knee-high boot is hott this winter.

It's the most recession-proof fashion has been in years -- wear what you've already got in your closet!

They are my absolutely fave shoes in the world -- ancient, cracked, discolored. But I so love them, wide as my huge feet are.

Now here's a question for you Susan: How do you feel about the hegemony of the heel of the season? I love a large square heel, or even half-square heel, but it drives me crazy when stiletto boots come in and out because all the comfy high heels go away. Am I forced to stiletto or Ugg this one out?

I'm not opposed to the Ugg (although my personal choice is a pair of old school L. L. Bean Maine Hunting Shoes, circa 1986 -- yes, really!) but honestly, I'm tired of seeing Uggs and sweatpants -- if it's cold enough for sheepskin lined boots, it's cold enough for real pants, like jeans or corduroys.  Also no more Uggs with shorts, please.  PLEASE.  These are BOOTS; wear them when it is COLD.  If you can still run around town in shorts, put on some warm weather shoes.

Uggs are great for inclement weather, and they DO look better than a lot of sturdy cold weather boots, but they are NOT dress boots; keep them casual.  If you want to wear them with a dress, choose a sweater dress and treat it as what Tim Gunn calls the "sweatsuit alternative."

I'm so happy fashion has gotten functional. They might not to be sexiest boots on the market, but man are they warm and COMFORTABLE!

Many believe the Uggs boot to be the most comfortable on the market.  It is crafted with sheepskin which is soft.  It conforms to the shape of the foot and keeps it cool in hot weather and warm in the freezing cold.  The functionality and craftsmanship of the sheepskin along with its comfort makes it a popular choice.

I have a pair and I am very please!
