Dear Heart,

I have heard people talk about "old souls" and how their child, friend, mother, niece, cousin is so wise and how they must be an old soul. They are insightful and thoughtful and deep. At once serene and powerful, they are the humpback whales in all the oceans all rolled in to one flowing soul of grace and beauty.

I can honestly say, you and I, we are not that. Fragile and wobbly, we are the newborn fawn in left alone in the forest clearing, the newest of new souls. We love unconditionally, believe completely in good intentions.

Our immediate and intense ability to love leaves us vulnerable. It is not just boys/husband/lovers to whom we fall victim. Friends seem to be the place where we are most susceptible to lasting wounds. Whereas in romantic love we are quick to forgive, move on and try again, in friendship the wounds remain open and oozing. A place we cannot lick them clean and where we are relucant to let others in.

People have often told us to toughen up our skin. Let things roll, they like to say. Relax.

I suppose in our next life, should we get the chance, we get to move up the soul-oldness ladder. We progress in our ability to care for ourselves. I just hope we continue to love as intensely, because that is where we seem to fully live.

Love, Amy
