Letting Children Go Hungry Is Evil
By Betty Fokker on October 07, 2013
You know how the dickcheese scumbuckets wing of the GOP, those dog ball sucking Mammon worshipers who think Ayn Rand wrote non-fiction, want to cut the hell out of SNAP (food stamps)? That they recently squeaked by a bill:
“written under the direction of the House majority leader, Eric Cantor, Republican of Virginia, would cut $40 billion from the food stamp program over the next 10 years. It would also require adults between 18 and 50 without minor children to find a job or to enroll in a work-training program in order to receive benefits … Republican leaders, under pressure from Tea Party-backed conservatives, said the bill was needed because the food stamp program, which costs nearly $80 billion a year, had grown out of control. They said the program had expanded even as jobless rates had declined with the easing recession.”
Let’s look at the ignorance/stupidity that ideology is based on, shall we? It turns out that:
“SNAP already has strict time-limits for unemployed workers. Able-bodied adults without dependents (ABAWDs) may only receive 3 months of SNAP benefits during any 3 year period, unless they are working in a qualifying job training program. The SNAP benefit formula is structured to provide a strong work incentive – for every additional dollar a SNAP participant earns, their benefits decline by about 24 to 36 cents, not a full dollar, so participants have a strong incentive to find work, work longer hours, or seek better-paying employment.”
The “savings” the GOP is yammering about will be achieved “by causing about 2 million low-income people currently enrolled in SNAP to lose their benefits and 210,000 children to lose free school meals” and by causing “about 400,000 low-income households to lose an average $90 per month in benefits, imposing a significant hardship for families struggling to put food on the table”. In short, the savings are going to come out of the hide of the poorest Americans -- “The average SNAP household has a gross monthly income of $744; net monthly income of $338 after the standard deduction and, for certain households, deductions for child care, medical expenses, and shelter costs; and countable resources of $331, such as a bank account”.
But the good news is that the taxes on billionaires won’t go up! In fact, the mega-rich might even get a tax cut! Brilliant plan, GOP!
There is no way around the fact that cutting SNAP funding is going to mean hungry kids. For more than a decade Children’s HealthWatch, a “research consortium” of scientists and doctors which has “accumulated data on the impacts of food insecurity and interventions to decrease food insecurity among low-income babies and young children … has convinced us that food insecurity — which affects approximately 16 million U.S. children (21.6 percent) — is one of the greatest public health threats that our nation faces. SNAP is the most important and effective public health program we have for reducing the health impacts of food insecurity.” Children’s HealthWatch points out ““Infants and young children in the first three years of life, the most critical period for the growth of the body and brain, are the most physiologically vulnerable to lasting ill effects of food insecurity on health and learning,” and “Scientific evidence shows that SNAP is a wise investment in the brains and bodies of American children, an investment that should be increased, not curtailed”.
Silly scientists and pediatricians! What do they know compared to a bunch of privileged asshats who have never had to skip a meal?
To top all this, the drizzle of shit on the cow pie of their asinine and short-sighted lack of compassion, is the fact that the majority of Far Right politicians proclaim to be devout Christians. No you aren’t, you anusweasels. The only thing you evil twatwaffles worship is Mammon.
