It was 4 a.m, I lay quietly in bed, barely able to contain myself. This day had special significance, it was goal setting time. I was hungry with anticipation and quietly rolled down the covers, slipped into my robe and tip toed into the kitchen. I filled the tea kettle with water and sat patiently waiting for the whistle. If there's one thing I love it is having a cup of hot tea, quiet time and writing down my thoughts. So, I often take advantage of the wee hours of the morning by doing something for me, like writing down my goals or thoughts.
I’m a big believer in setting goals—small goals, big goals and outrageously lofty goals. You know the kind I’m talking about, the ones others would think ridiculously impossible to obtain. Those are the best ones, Life Changer type goals.
The first time I thought about running in a half marathon it seemed like a million miles away. I had thought about it for many years but had never been able to muster up the courage to make it happen. After my 50th birthday and a second bout with breast cancer, I made the decision to step off the sidelines and start living...really living! I believe with all my heart and soul that we are responsible for the choices we make and ultimately their consequences. The feeling that came with completing my first half marathon was indescribable and one that I would love everyone reading this to experience. It could be anything that you've always dreamed of doing but just couldn't seem to make it happen. Maybe it's losing weight, staring a new career, ending an unhealthy relationship, traveling to another country--whatever you want from this life it is up to You to make a plan and go after it.
Well, the time has come to make the move. I'm not talking about next week or next month, I'm talking about right here, right now, this very moment. I want you to know and experience that same feeling. It's a true Life Changer!!!
While sipping my tea and savoring the moment, I began writing down my goals while at the same time creating a plan for how each would be accomplished.
Here are some of the goals that I will accomplish by the end of the year:
(notice I didn't say try to accomplish)
1)Run in three half marathons.
2)Be a better person by: becoming more patient, kinder, a better listener
3Motivate others to live their best life.
4)Stay healthy and fit.
5)Take risks...lots of them.
6)Start a new career (This goal has been marked off as ACCOMPLISHED)
7)Visit San Francisco.
8)Do one thing each and every day that I've been afraid to do in the past.
My list is safely tucked away in my undies draw. I will revisit it often, highlight accomplished goals and add to the list throughout the year.
