Life Lessons of an OCD Mom

Every mother goes through similar feelings ~ What if I'm not a good enough mother? Why does this have to be so hard? I wish I could go back to my self  XX  ago and take it all back and start over. If you are saying to yourself, I have never had that feeling, you are a liar. Being a self diagnosed Obsessive Compulsive, I have an innate desire to be perfect all the time. Is the house clean? Is my child presentable? Am I making a good impression? I can rack my brain over and over again and you know something? I am tired. Tired of the need to be perfect. Having a child has taught me how to start living with flaws and being OK with it.

Being a mother is hard work. As a mother you have a constant anxiety sitting in your heart waiting for something to go wrong. You wish with all your might that you are the best parent you can be to your child, and you wake up each day hoping you don't screw it up. You put on that first smile of the day when you greet your child and you hope to God she woke up in a good mood. You love her with all your heart, appreciate the blessing you have been given, and appreciate the man that gave her to you. Life lessons are learned every day and they are constantly changing. The hardest lessons we learn in life are what shape us.

So here are my life lessons from an OCD mom ~

  1. No matter how hard the day gets, embrace the love that your child gives you. She's still a child and figuring things out for herself. She doesn't fully understand the repercussions of her actions.
  2. Things don't have to be perfect. As much as we have a need to feel perfect it's never going to happen so forget it and move on.
  3. Have a sense of humor. If you can't laugh at yourself, no one is going to laugh for you.
  4. Appreciate what you have been given. It may not seem like much to you but things could always be worse. Do you have a roof over your head? A car to drive? Somebody that loves you even on your worst day?
  5. To be loved and respected you need to first love and respect yourself.
  6. Sometimes you need to act like a child. Go ahead..embrace that deep puddle and jump into it! Don't care that your clothes are going to be wet and you'll be cold and your jeans won't want to come off later. Your kid will love you for your spontaneity and it will put a huge smile on their face.
  7. Bad things do happen to good people. It's how we choose to deal with the situation that makes us a better person.
  8. Take LOTS of pictures! Make sure you put yourself in them. You don't want your child to look at your pictures one day and ask where was mama?
  9. Remember that your actions today create a memory that can last a lifetime. How do you want to be remembered?
  10. Hug your loved ones every day. Even if they are pissing you off and they are the last people you want to see. They could be gone tomorrow and you will feel horrible if you didn't get to show them that you love them even with their faults.
As I navigate through motherhood, I constantly need to remind myself that perfection is not attainable no matter how many times it's asked of us. So I choose to raise my daughter that it's OK for her to be herself, make some mistakes and laugh her way through life.
