Anyone who has truly suffered migraines knows how hard it can be to cope. I have been suffering migraines since I was 16, about 9 years. I have tried every treatment short of narcotics. I have tried alternative health treatments, acupuncture, chiropractic, massage. Nothing has worked. I have even had trips to the hospital and been injected with 3 different drugs only to leave home hours later with the same pain I came in with.
After I had my baby just over a year ago, I was angry that so many nights (2-3 times a week) I was locked up inside my dark, cool room unable to care for her. My husband was great in taking over, but I felt complete guilt. I decided things had to change, and since no doctor was able to figure out what was wrong, (although I feel blessed for all their effort), I had to take matters into my own hands.
I did some research online, and decided to try the "Raw Foods" diet. For those of you who have not heard of it, it's basically a vegan diet of uncooked, fresh foods...ie., vegetables, fruits, nuts, and seeds. It sounded a little crazy to me, but I was desperate.
It was not easy...but to my surprised, it worked!! I didn't have a single migraine during the whole diet, except the first day when I was transitioning! And to add to that, I lost weight too!
But then, I got lazy. I gave in to my cravings. I somehow convinced myself that maybe it wasn't the food that was causing the migraines. I mean, I've tried eliminating things before, (dairy, sugar, wheat) and it didn't work.
Slowly my migraines returned. And last night I was hit with one so severe, in the moment I had sworn off chocolate for good.
I need to get back to the diet. I find it expensive, and difficult when trying to feed your family and trying not to be too much of an inconvenience when you go to people's houses for dinner, but seriously, these migraines are not worth it!! If I have the power to stop it, my daughter deserves to have her mom healthy enough to care for her. I remember many times watching my mom laying on the couch with a cold cloth on her head unable to do anything - make dinner, play with me, or even talk to me.
Anyone who suffers migraines out there, I hope you won't give up in finding something that works for you. We CAN beat this!!
