Living with Once Vehicle
One Vehicle Life
For a year and a half we have had only one vehicle. It is a 2008 Dodge Ram 1500, and we both love it. We decided on one vehicle to save money. The goal was to save money for a new house. We did save a lot of money every month. We didn’t put as much into savings as we could have, but we did get a house!
I did not work so we would usually run errands on the weekends together (this was before Little Bird). If I needed the truck, I would just drop Jeff off at work in the morning and do what I needed in the afternoon, then pick him up in the evenings. It worked well for a while.
Little Bird is Born
Once Little Bird was born, living with one vehicle became a little more difficult. We had to plan errands and appointments at least 24 hours in advance. Since we were on a regular schedule, Little Bird would wake up around 7am every morning and we would bring Jeff to work at 7:40.
The problem came if Little Bird needed to go to the doctor that same day. It happened a few times with infections and etc, newborn stuff. Jeff would have to leave work and bring us to the doctor. We realized this was not going to work forever. We talked about it and figured on a second vehicle.
The Second Vehicle
We needed to decide on what kind of second vehicle. There are many to choose from. Our needs were: large enough for the car seat to fit comfortably, large enough for our dog to lay down in the back, lower to the ground than the truck, and comfortable for long trips in the back.
We decided a minivan might be in order for us. I always swore I would never drive a minivan again. (I drove one through the end of high school and college). I found a few minivans I liked and we went to the dealership. I first looked at a Chevy Uplander, it was horrible. It did not look very good, the seats were hard to move, and it was very dirty. We walked around for a while and saw a 2008 Dodge Grand Caravan. We had been happy with our Dodge truck so we why not a Dodge minivan? We took it for a test drive and I was hooked.
The van drove so smooth and it had so much more than we needed. It has two DVD players, they come in handy when I am in back with Little Bird. Stow n Go seating which is awesome, all the back seats fold into the floor. Our dog lays over them in the very back. It has a touch screen radio controls in the front which are just cool, along with a backup camera.
We ended up getting a really good deal. I did not realize minivans are much more cheap than other vehicles. My husband said it is because there are so many of them. I love our Dodge vehicles and it is very nice to have a second vehicle.
