Though LIFE magazine launched in 1883, it did not become the photo-centric publication we know now it until Henry Luce bought and relaunched it in 1936. LIFE quickly became the gold standard in photojournalism, telling stories primarily with images, letting the pictures speak for themselves. The tradition continues online with their female-centric photo series, including, "Female Marines in Afghanistan" by Paula Bronstein, which provides a glimpse of our ladies in camoflauge.

"In 1918, Opha Mae Johnson became the first woman to enlist in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve. Today, there are 48 female American Marines on the front lines in Afghanistan, often gaining access -- and trust -- among Afghan women and children in ways that male American and NATO troops might not be able to manage. Here, a series of up-close-and-personal photos of the Marine FET (Female Engagement Team) taken by Getty's Paula Bronstein in late 2010."

As a free civilian, I can't imagine what these women have given up to be over there. All I know is, I'm deeply grateful.

Wishing a peaceful weekend for all.
