10 things We Wish Someone Had Told Us When We Started Graduate School

There are those lessons you learn from facing the fire and walking through it. Those things that you read and know will change the way you think about your life. This list is definitely an outpouring of the former, whether it will serve as the latter for you remains to be seen. So What Did We Wish Someone Had Told Us When We Started Graduate School?*This is partly the advice we would give ourselves if we could go back to day one, an encouragement to those of us still engaged in doctoral and masters coursework, theses, and dissertations, and a chance to express the best of what we know to those thinking about embarking on a PhD or MA program....more

Fish: It's Not Just for Catholics, It's Not Just for Fridays

Fish and Fridays, they go way back, way way back. But cooking fish is so easy, so quick, so healthful, it's not just for Catholics anymore -- at least, it shouldn't be. And while we're at it, let's decide that fish isn't just for Fridays, either. ...more

Need an answered prayer?

JMJ Do you have a prayer request? A special need?  Well, I spent all night placing a live webcam to Lourdes, France on my website, including a little mailbox to their prayer request email.  All kinds of weird computer problems kept cropping up, and I kept offering them up as a prayer, which did help to keep me from being annoyed.  Then... At the Bottom of a Cup of Tea? Patience.

While I was brewing some green tea the other day, I realized that it was my grandmother who tried to teach me patience with a cup of the stuff.  I am a person who always wants things yesterday, which partly explains why it took me so long to understand my grandmother's lesson.  Perhaps a cup of tea each day will bring greater revelation, drop by drop....more

Choice, Conscience, and Christmas

For the past several years, I've reflected during the Christmas season on what The Annunciation says about women, self-determination, and pregnancy. I've read the story many times - basically an angel comes to Mary to tell her that God chose her to give birth to His son, then the angel gives her some time to think about it, and Mary agrees to do it. There's nothing in there about anyone being forced to give birth to a child that she did not plan for. What's beautiful about the story is that Mary voluntarily says yes, risking serious social ostracizing and other problems. ...more
