What Do You Do When They Are Old Enough to Shave: Venus $50 Giveaway

It's such a poignant moment when you realize the baby girl who you swear was wearing frilly diaper covers and Mary Janes yesterday, suddenly starts to get hair on her legs. It’s one of many firsts that seem to hit me harder than the boys' firsts.  It shouts that my baby girl is growing up.  What happened to my little girl?   Then the inevitable comes. Sooner than you realize or are ready for, the,"When can I shave my legs, Mommy?" question arrives.  For my very girly, always wearing pink daughter, it was way sooner. Waaay sooner. Too soon.  Read more

Talking to Our Daughters About (Gulp) Shaving

We here at The Mouthy Housewives always strive to help our readers with every kind of problem -  divorce, Facebook, in-laws and yes, shaving too. We've dealt with the issue of shaving many times, even the weirdness of shaving husbands. But we've also talked about knowing when our daughters are ready to shave because it's important  to find a balance between accepting our bodies and making young teens feel comfortable with the changes they are experiencing.  Read more

Teaching Daughters About the Important Little Things

When I was a teenager and getting ready to start shaving, my mom was old school about it. She handed me one of those scary razors, you know the ones with all the blades and no instruction on how to use it. I proceeded to shave off every bit of skin along the back of my ankle. I did not know to keep the leg stretched out. It bled for hours.   Now that I have four daughters, I have taken a different approach. When a sensitive topic comes up and I need to teach them about how to deal with it, I just lay it all out for them.  Read more

Shaving Firsts

We have experienced a lot of 'firsts' around here lately.  It seems like only a few years ago that I was signing Kam up for her first ballet class. We were picking out tutus and ballet shoes; now we are buying razors and makeup. Where does the time go?  I talk all the time about what a great girl we have.  She is smart, funny, confident and talented.  I am sad that her elementary days are coming to an end so quickly, but at the same time, I am so excited for her to experience Junior High. This year has been a life changing year for Kam.  Read more

My Daughters Aren't So Little Anymore

Lindsey was nearly 15 years old when I became her mom. She was already wearing makeup, coloring her hair, shaving her legs, and dealing with periods. I wasn't there for any of that. I couldn't teach her about those things and help guide her through those milestones. There have been many areas where we've had to try to correct misconceptions she had because all of her information came from other girls who didn't really know any better than she did.  It makes me sad to have missed all that.  Read more

Real Beauty, Gillette Venus Razor Review and $50 Gift Card Giveaway

So, I got to review the Venus Embrace razor for new shavers together with my daughter. The razor has five blades, a moisture strip, and a no-slip (pink) grip handle. Plus we got a whole bottle of their Passionista Fruit Satin Care shaving gel. My daughter was excited about that. "Is it going to make me smell like that?"  "Maybe. At least a little bit."  "Wow! And they should make one that smells like pigs because then it would smell like me!"  Now my daughter does NOT smell like pigs. Or even a pig.  Read more

Venus Embrace Razors for NEW Shavers!

I remember when my girls were babies and it felt like the diaper and the waking up in the middle of the night stages would last FOREVER.  I remember women in the supermarket telling me to enjoy it--it would go fast and be gone soon!  I remember thinking I would trade places with them for a decent night's sleep.  I feel like I blinked my eyes and here I am talking to Allie about make-up and shaving and puberty.  It's crazy!  On the one hand, I wish we could go back in time so she could just be my little peanut forever.  Read more

Venus Embrace and Passionista Fruit Satin Care Shave Gel-Review and Giveaway

I shaved my legs for the first time when I was 13 years old.  I remember being embarrassed by how hairy my legs were, so I helped myself to my mother's disposable razor and a bar of soap, and when I was finished? The bathroom looked like a crime scene due to all the blood.  I managed to slice all the skin off of the backs of my knees as well as my shins, and it hurt so terribly bad and took a month to heal.  I remember this like it was yesterday every single time I shave despite it being *cough* 22 years after the fact.  Read more

A First of Many Firsts

When my youngest child came to me asking about shaving her legs, a few thoughts ran through my head.First of all: Wasn't she just born, like, last week?  And now she's ELEVEN years old?  How does this happen? And then: OMG she's going to cut herself to pieces. The thing is, she does need to shave.  Her legs are quite hairy (sorry, kid), and we live in Florida.  Shorts are worn year-round.  I just wasn't sure I was ready for yet another "first".  She's my last child.  Read more

Smoothing The Way Through "Firsts"

I have worked in an elementary school for five years now.  I have watched the current fifth graders since they were wee little first graders.  Just like every fifth grade class before them, this group has girls who are running head first into puberty with bubbling over excitement at bras and make up.  It also has girls who are dragging their feet, preferring to stay little girls just a bit longer. I’ve had one of each at my house.  Reagan was a foot dragger.  She did not want to discuss boob or periods or “special changes”.  Read more
