Lindsay Lohan, Michael Steele, & the RNC's New PR Mess

Whatever happened to GOLFING as a way to network?

There is a report out today that Republican National Committee staffers and their chairman spend money in interesting places while on the road. From Jillian Bandes at TownHall.com:

According to a new Federal Election Commission filing, Steele spent $1,946.25 at Voyeur West Hollywood, which features topless women in what one Yelp reviewer called "a really sexy/gothic experience." That experience would include women imitating oral sex, according to many reports.
In the same trip, Steele spent $9,099 at the Beverly Hills hotel and $6,596 at a Four Seasons.

The National Review's Katheryn Jean Lopez is reporting Steele wasn't the RNC staffer hanging out at the sexy, topless, gothic place though:

I asked an RNC spokesman about the story — specifically the charge that money was spent at Voyeur West Hollywood.

The spokesman said: “We are investigating the expenditure in question. The story willfully and erroneously suggests that the expenditure in question was one belonging to the chairman. This was a reimbursement made to a non-committee staffer. The chairman was never at the location in question, he had no knowledge of the expenditure, nor does he find the use of committee funds at such a location at all acceptable. Good reporting would make that distinction crystal clear. The committee has requested that the monies be returned to the committee and that the story be corrected so that it is accurate.”

So is the staffer getting fired for getting reimbursed for an expense he/she made and the RNC then agreed to pay him for? I'm confused.

This isn't the first time Steele's spending, or ideas on how to spend, have come into question. From the Washington Monthy:

Michael Steele, chairman of the Republican National Committee, has been questioned more than once about his judgment and priorities when it comes to spending his party's money. We learned a month ago, for example, about the RNC chief spending excessively on private planes, limousines, catering, and flowers.

It didn't help when the party, hoping to have every penny it can get its hands on for the midterms, also hired Wolfgang Puck's D.C. crew to cater the RNC's Christmas party at a trendy hotspot, and moved its winter meeting from Washington to Hawaii.

Over at Shakesville they are guessing there MUST be a good reason...right?

I'm sure there's a simple explanation; he just stopped in to get directions to Pastor Rick Warren's church and use the bathroom.

Gawker, meanwhile, is disappointed in the RNC's choice of establishments:

Now, Voyeur is not really a "strip club" so much as a terrible-sounding nightclub with bottle service, long lines, Lindsay Lohan, and, yes, half-naked ladies simulating oral sex on each other. Which, to be honest, sounds way stupider than a proper, respectable strip club. Shame on you, Michael Steele, for encouraging this kind of thing.

The GOP and Lindsay Lohan. What a lovely thought.

Seriously, whatever happened to golfing?
