The Alphabet Meme

Posted in Random Thoughts at 5:50 pm by Nicole

Alas.  I am suffering from a little bit of writer’s block brought on by the excitement of the elections and also the fact that my pants are still a bit tight, and I’m so tired of this whole “working for a living” thing.  Yes, it is one of those days.  But!  I scoured the Internets to find something to write about and I found this meme, which I shall forthwith resurrect and dust off and fill out for you!  Yay!

A - Available or Single? Wait a second, isn’t that the same thing?  If you are available, you are single, right?  Or not, I guess.  I am not single, but I am available to get drinks with friends, though that happens all too infrequently.
B - Best Friend? My best gay-guy friend Stan.  And Jameson, of course.  But there is something to be said about having a best friend that is not your SO.  Stan keeps me, me.
C - Cake or Pie? That is a tough one. If it is a well-done red velvet, angel food, or molten chocolate, then I would say cake. But I also like grasshopper ice cream pies from Baskin-Robbins, warm apple pie ala mode, and boston creme pies. Now I’m hungry.
D - Drink of Choice? Maker’s and Coke or Grey Goose and Ginger Ale. If they have Grey Goose Pear, sometimes I will do that with Ginger Ale. Or a margarita.
E - Essential Item(s)? My iPhone and work blackberry (I swear, it is a leash). Also, and I don’t know if this counts, but I have to get my eyebrows waxed at least once a month. It’s a weird compulsion, but I feel like a hairy mess if I don’t get them done.
F - Favorite Color? Pink - like a strong hot pink. And Kelly Green. And Sky blue.
G - Gummi Bears or Worms? Worms are good because they are more substantive with the gumminess, but bears are cool because you can decapitate them with your teeth.
H - Hometown? NYC!
I -  Indulgence?  I indulge a lot, unfortunately for me and my credit card and waistline. Clothes shopping, massages, facials, shoes, the afore-mentioned brow waxing, FFDs (fun, fancy dinners).
J - January or February? What kind of question is this?
K - Kids? Eventually. When I/we can afford them. I was telling a friend the other day that I was not the “natural mother”/nurturer type. I think it is because I have always been the “baby” of the family and my group of friends.
L - Life is incomplete without… Love. The Beatles have it right - All you Need is Love.
M - Marriage Date None as of yet.
N - Number of Siblings One older brother.
O - Oranges or Apples? Apples. Oranges are hard to peel and pulpy. But, a mushy apple is THE WORST.
P - Phobias/Fears Bee stings. I will run and hide and look like a complete ass to get away from the bees. I think it is because I’ve never been stung before…so maybe it is actually fear of the unknown? Besides that, not much fears, but I will cop to having a pretty distinct set of neuroses and idiosyncrasies about dirt and crumbs that drives Jameson NUTS.
Q - Favorite Quote “One by one, we can be the better world we wish for.” I saw it on a card, and it stuck with me ever since.
R - Reasons to Smile? The holidays and Christmas music always make me smile.
S - Season? Currently, we are knee deep in cloudy, chilly Fall. And I like it. But I like all the seasons, it is a good thing that we get all four (though muted versions of some of them in LA…)
T - Tag Three Anyone that wants to play along!
U - Unknown Fact About Me I was the valedictorian of my Kindergarten class!
V - Vegetarian or Oppressor of Animals?  Oh, I’m a big time carnivore. At restaurants I’ll usually get the steak or the burger. I’m trying, however, on the day-to-day, to eat more greens and less meats generally.
W - Worst habits? My severe lack of self-discipline, which precludes me from dieting, exercising regularly, and getting to my laundry. I think I use up all my self-discipline at work, so I have none of it left for my personal life.
X - X-rays or Ultrasounds?  Strange questions. Ummm, neither?
Y - Your Favorite Foods Anything trashy - Taco Bell, etc.
Z - Zodiac Virgo!

Splitting Up the Holiday Season

Posted in Relationship ups and downs at 4:30 pm by Nicole

How do couples navigate the trickiness of the holidays?  I know that when you are married with kids, you can split your time - Thanksgiving with one family, Christmas with the other.  But, what about if you are just dating?  And, what about the friends?

Pre-Jameson, my friends and I would always celebrate Thanksgiving together.  We were all in LA and most of our families were spread out across the country and no one could ever afford to go home.  So we started going to Vegas over Thanksgiving, or trying to cook a turkey ourselves, or going to a spa.  We would always do something together, since we were the Thanksgiving orphans.  We always knew that spending that holiday with our families would be preferable, but since we couldn’t, we’d have fun on our own.

Now, Jameson’s family lives in Reno, which is close enough for him to go there for Thanksgiving, and he talks like he is assuming that I am coming too.  (I went last year, when we couldn’t stand to be apart for more than an hour at a time.)  And I want to, and I’m glad that his family has been so accepting of me, but a part of me feels bad for missing out on the orphan Thanksgiving with my friends.  I feel like I am moving on and leaving them behind?  Even though I also know that it is not really like that.  But, then, why do I feel so guilty?

And then there is Christmas.  Jameson and I would like to spend Christmas together, but it just does not seem feasible.  My family lives in New York, and I have NEVER not been home for Christmas.  Plus, it is just my mother, my father, and my brother, usually, so my absence would really be missed if I didn’t go.  And, I can’t bring Jameson home with me because he’s an only child and also has not NOT been to his home for Christmas and so he doesn’t want to leave his parents alone for the holidays.  I argue that if I go to his family’s for Thanksgiving, he should come with me to mine for Christmas, but I also don’t want to be the bad guy forces him to leave his parents all alone on the holidays.

Does anyone have any thoughts?  Shared experiences?  Stories about holiday planning solutions?  I’d love to hear ‘em.  I love the holidays, but the logistics of it all can be such a nightmare!

The Nesting 15

Posted in Good Health! at 4:15 pm by Nicole

Last night, when I was putting lotion on my legs, I noticed that they were all soft and flabby.  And they looked bigger than usual.

I’ve been wearing boxy dresses a lot lately.  I told myself that it was because it was chic, but it is also really comfortable to not have something dig into your waistline.

I don’t pose for pictures anymore, and I haven’t worn a pair of jeans in months.

I eat multi-course dinners, and sit around “resting” and watching tv afterwards.

Yup, I am suffering from the Nesting 15.  Now, what can I do about it?

Give us your insight!

Posted in General at 1:08 pm by Nicole

Oh hello, HI THERE.  I am back from a delicious vacation in Mexico wherein I did nothing but lounge on the beach and drink pina coladas and eat and get fat.  It was absolutely fantastic.

Of course, I get back to an economic meltdown and only a month left before the election.  These are very exciting and scary times we live in, and sometimes I wonder whether musing on my current state of romantic affairs is even all that interesting to you at all, or if we should just talk politics?  And if we talk politics, will there be stuff to talk with you guys about after the election?  Or should we talk about all the the above, especially since this site is called 100 Different Things, and not just 100 Thoughts on the Same Thing, as Anna so cleverly put it the other day.

I consider all of y’all friends.  And so, we are asking YOU - what do you want to read about from us?  What is most interesting?  Is there anything that you want to know, that you are dying to ask us to post about?

Here’s the quick poll I did:

Thanks for voting and God Bless America!  :)

Pathetic Palin: Tina Fey nails it on SNL

Posted in News! at 5:51 pm by Anna

Okay folks…
I’ve been away for a while - got incredibly busy with work.
I’m back now to say…I actually feel sorry for Sarah Palin!

I don’t blame the McCain camp for keeping her from the media - she can’t put a sentence together. Her confidence is sinking daily (with good reason), and every interview seems to get worse! I mean, there are 6th graders who can do a better job answering questions about the bailout.

I have lost so much respect for McCain, for putting billions of lives at risk by putting her in a position to be potential prez…Can we impeach a candidate? ;-)

Yesterday’s SNL skit with Tina Fey just nailed it!

McCain: Women Don’t Have the Right…

Posted in News! at 12:03 pm by Anna

To Decide
To Choose
To Trust our own best judgement
To Know what is best for our bodies, our families
To Take responsibility for whether or not we have the means & ability to raise a child in the way he/she deserves

Women don’t have the right. It is that simple.

We do not have the right to follow our hearts.
To use the power of our minds.
To guide the course of our own lives.

We don’t have the right. Maybe we’re not smart enough.

Women do not have the right to think our own thoughts.
To revel in our femininity.
To be glad that we are women.

We don’t deserve to be respected, much less adored & admired for the unique, quirky, exquisite creatures that we are.

We don’t have that right. Perhaps we don’t deserve it.

John McCain’s wife Cindy doesn’t have the Right to help him before an interview, without him calling her a C*NT in public, in front of reporters.

She DOES have the right to smile after being humiliated in public, then defend her humiliator during the campaign to fulfill his lifelong dream of attaining glory and power.

Chelsea Clinton doesn’t have the right to be a normal teenager without John McCain making this ugly joke in front of reporters: “Why is Chelsea Clinton so ugly? Because her father is Janet Reno.”

I guess Chelsea, Janet & Hillary don’t have the right to receive respect or common decency either. (But make sure you lay off Bristol, you sleazy media.)

Polar Bears don’t have the right to survive as a species.

The earth doesn’t have the right to be protected, respected, kept in tact.
(But we have the right to destroy it and then wonder why we live in a state of constant natural disaster)

OUR CHILDREN DO NOT HAVE THE RIGHT TO BE SAFE!
Anyone who tries to teach them how to protect themselves against inappropriate touching or sexual predators should be publicly mocked and portrayed as a predator himself!!
(Like the “honorable” McCain did to Obama in his latest so-called ad.)

We do not have the Right to natural, renewable energy - not as long as the oil companies can still squeeze & screw us for every last penny we own.

Women do not have the RIGHT to make up their own minds about the election either. We must be manipulated by a token woman, a symbol with a skirt, so we blindly follow the blind…to our own defeat and destruction. Cheering all the way, about the latest crack in the glass ceiling.

Women (and men for that matter) do NOT have the right to criticize, question, or do anything other than worship Sarah Palin. If we wonder about her alleged abuses of power, or her lack of basic foreign policy experience, not to mention her extreme world views…we are just SEXIST!

Women DO have the right to do whatever McCain says. To think what he thinks. To do his bidding at every turn. And to take his abuse with a smile. Like Cindy. And like in the dark ages.

Yup, that’s right.

Sarah Palin Fires Entire GOP Alaskan Delagation

Posted in News! at 9:52 pm by Anna

AP - Anchorage

In a bizarre turn of events Wednesday night, Alaskan Governor Sarah Palin returned to her home state into the welcome arms of the Alaskan GOP Party, which put on an elaborate rally in support of the Republican Vice Presidential candidate.

The awed Palin was seen mouthing the word, “Wow”, over and over again as she and husband Todd Palin passed their baby son back and forth to each other.

Shortly after the rally however, Governor Palin stunned the audience by saying, “Well I unfortunately don’t have a speechwriter for this occassion, so Alaska for one last time, it’s just you and me.”

At this the crowd proffered a deafening cheer.

Palin then proceeded to list all the names of the people who did not do her bidding when she was “just the Mayor of a tiny town with a $6 million dollar annual budget” in her words. The crowd listened in stunned silence as her voice rose and grew in anger.

Palin continued on with a litany of “unsupportive” and “faithless” people who disagreed with her during her 18 months as Governor of the state; and who refused to align themselves with her “vision of God’s plan.”

The feisty Republican then criticized the Alaskan GOP Party for not jumping to her defense the past few weeks when “the media smeared me”.

With a flick of the hand and nasal whine that would make the Donald himself green with envy, Palin squeeked into the mic, “You’re fired.”

Okay, so that was a silly farsicle. Now the Real Underlying Issue!

If Sarah Palin tried to fire the Wasilla Librarian for refusing to ban books; and allegedly fired a gov’t official for refusing to fire her ex-brother in law…Who else do you think she may have tried to …or wanted to…or thought of…or succeeded in firing…and for what?

First class, up in the sky, popping champagne, living my life in the fast lane

Posted in Vacation (all I ever wanted) at 8:28 pm by Nicole

Tomorrow I will be on a plane to a tropical destination far far away from LA.  (Mexico!)  I’m taking two weeks to decompress and not do ANYTHING except lounge, drink pina coladas, and eat.  And I cannot wait.  Meanwhile, I am slaving away here at work trying to wrap everything up before the trip…it’s going to be a long night.

My posting will be sporadic (though, I will try and post pictures of the beach) but Anna is back with a vengance on all the political posts (which, by the way, I LOVE, and I too am also obsessed with this election) so I’m sure she’ll keep y’all entertained with her commentary and news.

See you on the flip side!

Palin & the Librarian

Posted in News! at 7:14 am by Anna

I just heard on ABC News that the Librarian of the Wasilla Library was interviewed briefly. She basically said that Sarah Palin asked her if she’d be willing to remove certain books from the Library. As the President of the National Library Association, she said all the books were bought according to standards and guidelines, so No. She would not support banning any books.

A few weeks later she was fired.

The community uproared. (I heard they almost recalled her as Mayor, but I don’t know if that’s true.)

Sarah Palin was forced to reinstate the Librarian. But she quit 2 years later anyway, because she said Sarah Palin made it so hard for her.

She said Sarah Palin’s treatment of her was very rough, and it’s a time in her life she doesn’t care to revisit.

Says a lot about Sarah Palin. And probably, TrooperGate. I predict a lot more is going to come out about these types of stories. And it should. We need to know the truth about what kind of woman this really is. And what kind of leader she would potentially be (hope not).

Palin says Iraq War & Alaskan Gas Pipeline is “God’s Plan”

Posted in General at 12:26 pm by Anna

Nice.

Are the 3,000+ American deaths also God’s plan?

And the 350 billion dollars we’ve spent on the war - God’s plan?

The resulting layoffs, unemployment, gas prices… also God’s plan?

The suffering of millions of Americans who are unemployed & can’t afford the gas to go search for a job…That must be God’s plan too?

The extinction of polar bears? Definitely God’s cruel plan. After all she is suing the Bush administration for having the nerve to put them on the endangered list.

The Republicans losing the election in a mudslide? Now that sounds like a good plan. And I’ll thank God if it happens.
