Slow Food Nation Gathers with Questions & Praise, Both

by Alanna Kellogg at 9:02am Sat, 30 Aug 2008 under Food & Drink, Politics & News, Green & Eco-conscious
Between the Dems and the 'pubs comes another flag-waving, impassioned-speech convention, Slow Food Nation, the biennial gathering of followers of the Slow Food movement, this weekend hosted in perhaps the slow-food center of the United States, San Francisco. Who's on hand? What are they saying?

Everyone isn't talking, not yet anyway

The Washington Post published an article—or maybe it was an editorial or maybe it was an ad, I can't decide—called If Everyone's Talking, Who Will Listen recently. It was written by Dusty Horwitt. The article says there it too much information, especially from the overly talkative blogosphere, to the point that information just gets diluted, not spread in a useful way. Horwitt suggests that information outreach is impossible online. He states,

Feel good chocolate: Fair trade s'mores and Halloween kits

Camping over the long weekend? Make s'mores -- with fair trade chocolate -- then let your s'more be counted by registering it!

Is The Media To Blame For Over Hyping Gardasil? It Seems So.

A new question surrounding Merck's HPV vaccine. Is the media to blame for over hyping Gardasil? Personally, I think there is enough blame to go around for everyone here. But, the latest evidence is pointing to the news media sensationalizing the HPV and cervical cancer link. Why am I not surprized? Is there anything the news media doesn't over-hype and sensationalize these days? From The New York Times...

MOMocrats at the DNCC: We Came, We Saw, We're Exhausted

by Sarah Granger at 2:01am Sat, 30 Aug 2008 under Politics & News
The last two days of the Democratic National Convention contained a whirlwind of events culminating with the final speeches at Invesco field featuring Barack Obama, now the official Democratic nominee for president. Finally after a week of running around, we were all in the same place witnessing history.

DNC: Hollywood Goes to Denver

As Katy, Erin and I worked the convention from one end of Denver to the other we were treated to celebrity sightings galore. Despite the fact that Erin and Katy are from Los Angeles and are each tangentially related to the entertainment industry, I was the chief celebrity spotter due to my role as a diligent (um, some might say unhealthy - I like to call it thorough) pop culture observer.

Kids! Go Outside and Play! (If your helicopter parent will let you.)

As a child, summertime meant playing with my friends all day.  Outside.

Hurricane Katrina's Third Anniversary and Tales of Lingering Storm Phobia

I've observed the phenomenon of Katrina survivors fleeing public places at the first sign of rain and heard others testify to the potency of hurricane phobia. Down here in southeastern Louisiana, folks see rain, hear thunder, get a glimpse of lightning or dark clouds and they bolt for the doors, anxious to get home, hug their children, batten down, and make sure the world is safe.

BlogHer Talks to Those Who Witnessed History

by Erin Kotecki Vest at 9:29pm Fri, 29 Aug 2008 under Politics & News, Election 2008, CONVENTIONS, DEMOCRATS
As we move forward to Minneapolis-Saint Paul and the Republican National Convention, I wanted to take a minute to show BlogHer just some of the people we spoke with shortly after Senator Barack Obama's acceptance speech in Denver.

Butterflies, heaven and a stranger

by Mata H at 7:54pm Fri, 29 Aug 2008 under Religion & Spirituality, Heaven, butterflies
I've had out-of-town company for the past few days. On one outing we went to Magic Wings a butterfly conservatory. This is like a botanical garden to which 4,000 butterflies of all colors have been added. Adults and children walk around in wonder as beautiful butterflies land on beautiful flowers. The world is at peace there. Nature is in blissful harmony.

Giving Your Kids Hands-On Experience With Money

The subject of kids' allowances is a hot topic in the momosphere, as confused parents try to figure out the best way to teach their children responsible money management.  Most people would agree that hands-on experience is best, of course, but how do you navigate confusing chore charts?  Should you tie chores to payment, or are chores just part of being in the family?  And how do you know how much to pay them?
