Rejection: It Happens to Everyone

by Zandria at 12:59pm Sun, 7 Sep 2008 under Sex & Relationships, Single
If you decide to engage in online dating, you have to get used to being rejected. There’s no way around it. As a single woman who publicly proclaims that she’s “looking,” you’re no longer dealing with rejection on an occasional basis -- it’s not like meeting random people at a bar, or attempting to chat up a hottie on the Metro, or giving a sly smile to the person behind you while waiting for your lunch.

Canadian Election Called For October 14

While I was out this morning going to the farmers' market and getting breakfast, you know normal Sunday morning activities, the Prime Minister met with the Governor General, dissolved Parliament and called an election. (Personally I quite prefer my own Sunday morning activities.) Canadians will be heading to the polls on Tuesday, October 14 to elect a new government, even thought Stephen Harper said that it's going to be a tight election and they are anticipating another minority government.

No More Diet Coke Guy In The EU

He's too sexy. According to new rules on advertising created by the EU's women's right committee and approved by the EU parliament, regulatory bodies in charge of monitoring advertising are being asked to establish a "zero-tolerance" policy" against "sexist insults or degrading images." Haven't these folks heard about YouTube?

What is the place of bilingual education?

Dean Dad recently experienced a forehead-slapping moment about bilingual education:

Will Racism Pick the President? Plus WOC on Palin

Republican pollster Frank Luntz thinks so. He sought to reassure the California Republican delegation that Obama's lead in polls is, in part, an illusion...

Chouette Sac - One bag, eighteen looks

by Susan Wagner at 8:35pm Sat, 6 Sep 2008 under Fashion & Shopping, purse, tote, handbag, Chouette Sac, clutch
If you're thinking about ways to update your wardrobe on a budget (and who isn't these days?) think about adding one great accessory, something that will work with everything and last beyond this season.  The simplest upgrade is a really fantastic bag.  Bags are fabulous because they always fit (unlike your jeans), they're practical (your cell phone has to go SOMEWHERE!), and the right bag can dress up even the most basic jeans-and-tee combo.

PSA or Warning? Slow-Roasted Tomatoes

by Alanna Kellogg at 12:01pm Sat, 6 Sep 2008 under Food & Drink
Consider this either a public service announcement or a warning siren. You see, two years ago just about now, I was obsessed, completely, with learning all the tips and tricks for slow-roasting tomatoes. All the recipes suggested roasting tomatoes for an hour. Me, over 17 batches of slow-roasted tomatoes, I kept stretching and stretching the oven time until finally settling on the 'sweet spot' for slow-roasted tomatoes roasted for ...

Sittenfield's "American Wife": Will You Be Reading It?

by sassymonkey at 6:54am Sat, 6 Sep 2008 under Entertainment & Books, Books, Laura Bush
Ever since I've heard about Curtis Sittenfield's American Wife I've been wary. It's really not due to the fact that it's based on the life of Laura Bush but that it's fiction that is based on a public person while they are still, you know, alive. The long-time dead don't bother me so much, Jane Austen as an amateur detective? I can handle that. But basing a book on Laura Bush, while her husband is still in office no less?

McCain and Obama: The Politics of Healthcare

A new report is out about insurance and health care, and it's not good. If you think the cost of health care is high now, just wait...It's going to get even higher. Who would have thought that you could have insurance, and still not be able to afford healthcare? How is that possible? Only in America.

Alzheimer's and Caregiving -- A Daughter's Story of Love

This week I had the great opportunity to talk with author Mary Ellen Geist.  Several years ago Mary Ellen was described by the New York Times as the:

The election makes me nervous. Please pass me an eggplant.

by Mata H at 9:47pm Fri, 5 Sep 2008 under Religion & Spirituality, prayer, anxiety, canning, election, harvest
I can't think any more today about the election. My brain is full. During this season of conventions and media debates, I have been a spiritual domestic goddess by day and a TV watcher by night. I bought a 9 cubic foot freezer. I have been buying vegetables and various freezeables for days now. My friends are asking me, "So, what did you do with tomatoes today?"
