Live Below the Line 2014

   Today was shopping day!

I am participating in Live Below the Line, to raise awareness of and money for extreme poverty. From April 28th- May 2nd, I am challenged to eat and drink on $1.50 a day. After much deliberation, I chose UNICEF as my charity of choice from the list of amazing charities to choose from.

List in hand, and $7.50 budget on my mind, I went to the grocery store. After snapping two bananas off my bunch of three, I came in at a whopping total of $7.42.

   Here is my haul:

A box of angel hair pasta, a bag of dry lentils, a family size tub of strawberry yogurt, a bag of frozen mixed veg, chicken broth, diced tomatoes, two tiny sweet potatoes, an onion, and one banana. I will supplement these with the oatmeal, rice, and spices in my pantry. I have budgeted cost per serving of EVERYTHING, and I will be sure not to go over my $1.50 a day budget.

Sure, a case of Ramen and a case of mac and cheese would have been easier, but I know how I would feel after eating a steady diet of starchy, salty food. I have given myself the additional challenge of eating as healthily as possible. (I have to admit, when I saw that the tub of yogurt cost $1.50, an entire day's budget, I was tempted to grab some Ramen instead!)

If you want to participate or donate, head over to and click on your country. Should you wish to donate to my personal page, it is ; and I would be ecstatic for your support.

Stay tuned for meal costs and pics, as well as my personal reflections as I go through this process.
