Multiple news sources are confirming that Pres. Obama will announce this morning that he is nominating Federal Appeals Court Judge Sonia Sotomayor to be the third woman and first Hispanic on the Supreme Court. Sotomayor, 54, was first nominated to the Federal bench by Pres. George H.W. Bush, and re-nominated by Pres. Clinton. Earlier this month, Jeffrey Rosen published a highly suspect piece of journalism ( http://www.tnr.com/politics/story.html?id=45d56e6f... ) citing anonymous sources questioning Judge Sotomayor's intelligence and demeanor.  It led to a torrent of criticism, including this knock from a blogger at The National Review who argued ( http://corner.nationalreview.com/post/?q=YmM0YmE5M... ) that it shouldn't have been published. In a subsequent post ( http://www.tnr.com/politics/story.html?id=6168aeb7... ), Rosen protested that he had not meant to make a definitive case against Sotomayor, but he was reporting concerns he had heard about her temperament and some of her readings of the law in specific cases. Today, he wrote ( http://blogs.tnr.com/tnr/blogs/the_plank/archive/2... ),"Of course, Judge Sotomayor should be confirmed." He also denounced critics of Sotomayor who used his earlier post to question her intelligence.

Why are people still calling her a light weight?  I don't understand she is very experienced.

This blog post ( http://www.scotusblog.com/wp/the-dynamic-of-the-no... ) asserts that the knocks on Sotomayor's intelligence, temperament and judicial philosophy lack substance.

We're following this news as well.   At WVFC ( http://womensvoicesforchange.org/supreme-court-buz... ), we’ve been rooting for every woman on the shortlist.  But
we’ll be keeping extra-close watch on the cable-TV noise if they try to
pull the “too aggressive” or “fiery Latina” or “affirmative action”
card and try to stop her confirmation.
