A Look at Nexus Devices from Google
We've covered the new products from Apple that will be available this holiday season. We've talked about Microsoft's new Windows 8 operating system and the devices it will be calling to you from. Let's see, what else might be on the horizon at year's end? Oh, yeah, that Google outfit has a whole series of new gadgets called Nexus. The war for your tablet dollars is ON!

The Nexus line includes a smart phone called Nexus 4, a small tablet called the Nexus 7, and a full sized tablet called Nexus 10. All three devices use the Android 4.2 (aka Jelly Bean) operating system. All three are aimed at buyers who want a tablet but don't want to spend the big bucks for that iOS gadget. As Hannah Grimm pointed out on Google+,
Google's Nexus 10 tablet is lighter, thinner, faster, and higher resolution than the ipad...for hundreds of dollars cheaper.
Here's the price rundown:
- Nexus 4: 8GB for $299; 16GB for $349
- Nexus 7: 16GB for $199 and 32GB for $249 or the Nexus 7 with 32GB and mobile data $299
- Nexus 10: 16GB for $399; 32GB for $499
The devices are selling in Europe, Canada, the U.S., and Australia beginning November 11. They will also be available online in the Google Play store. In the U.S., the stores selling Nexus include Gamestop, Office Depot, Office Max, Staples and Walmart.
Selling points for the Android devices include Google Now, which provides information quickly about items as diverse as shipping information or restaurant reservations. Each device comes with Google Play and its storehouse of movies, TV shows, and games. There's a new tool for sharing images called Photo Sphere that shares images (even images shot in 360 degree panoramas) on Google+. Here's an example photo of Manhattan during Sandy. Android is designed to work with Gmail, the Google browser, Google Maps, and other Google tools you may depend on every day.
Amy at Amy's Ramblings reviewed the 7" model. She gets the last word:
If you’re looking for a 7″ device that you’ll use for games and reading and light browsing, I can’t recommend this enough. It’s an amazing little tablet and I love this size. It’s perfect for reading.
