The "Lost" Finale: It Ended The Way It Began, Brilliantly!

Well, it ended the way it began. Lost," one of the most ambitious, mind bending and exciting shows ever on television ended by being true to itself and its characters. Frustrated viewers be damned.

Personally, I loved it!

Though I'll be honest. I had to watch the show all the way through, then spend the next hour going back through all the flash sideways scenes. And then, spending the next half hour playing back the last fifteen minutes, twice.

Only then did I feel like I could do this post justice. Only then did I feel I could verbalize what this long-awaited finale was all about.

Ultimately, I figured it out. All you had to do was listen carefully to Jack's dead father, Christian Shephard, as he answered Jack's questions, which were really our questions.

Okay, so here goes. This entire season of flashes sideways, those were all scenes of the characters after they had died. They were living not real lives, but spiritual lives. Lives that they created based on their own experiences, hopes and desires.

It was up to Desmond to make them remember their connections and bring them together so that they could finally be released from the tethers of those spiritual lives. Only when they were all together, could they all move on. To heaven, or wherever else the viewer wants to interpret.

Because as Jack's Dad, Christian, said in one of the final scenes, the time they spent with each other, on and off the island, were the most important and meaningful times of their lives.

So Jack's son? That was Jack's spirit creating a life for himself with a son. Kate being a fugitive? That was Kate's spirit following through with what happened to her in life. Hurley being the luckiest man on earth? That was Hurley's spirit creating that "better" world for himself.

It was Desmond's job to bring them all together after all of them were dead. Whenever that happened. So Hurley could have lived until he was 90 years old, and if he were the last to die, that would be when these scenes were taking place.

Remember Jack's call to the Losties? "Live together, die alone?" In this case it was "Live together, die together."

And the beauty of it all is that the show ended as twisty-bendy as it existed. I loved that. I also loved that I needed to rewatch parts of it so many times to get it.

Everything else happening on the island was almost anti-climatic. But of course it was still important. At its best, "Lost" was a show with fascinating, compelling characters, spiritual mythology, and great action and adventure.

The action and adventure in the finale consisted of Jack's final island showdown with Smoky Locke. With Desmond's help, Jack was able to defeat Smoky Locke, sacrificing himself in the process. It was a heroic death to save the world, leaving Hurley and his newly chosen second in command, Ben, in charge of protecting the island.

The finale played with time, just like the entire series played so skillfully with time. Just as the series used flashbacks like no other TV show ever has, the finale was interwoven with flashbacks as the characters remembered each other.

Just as the series used time travel to keep the viewer on an emotional roller coaster, the finale played with time by never telling the viewer when the flash sideways scenes were taking place, the implication being it could be years from now -- but only when all of those characters were dead.

That plot device also allowed the writers to give viewers a series retrospective with a truly unique plot-driven reason to do so.

When it came to the last shot of the finale, I'm going to toot my own horn a little by saying that I predicted the last shot. As it was the first shot in the pilot, so it was the last shot in the finale: a closeup of Jack's eye. Only this time it closed as he died in the same bamboo grove he woke up in after the crash. The plane carrying Frank, Miles, Sawyer, Claire and Kate, flying by overhead, and the ever loyal Vincent lying next to him as he slipped away.

Live together, die together.

Needless to say I sobbed my eyes out. When Jin and Sun remembered. When Kate remembered. When Sawyer and Juliet remembered. When Sayid saw the

Hi Ramon,

That's a nice thought, that you remember the last conversation you had with the person you loved most. I didn't remember that but I'll take your word for it.

Regarding Walt, remember Walt had psychic power of some sort. It's possible he didn't need to be dead for Smokey to use him.

Or it's even possible that it was Jacob who came to Locke as Walt. That man had a lot of powers we can only guess at.

All part of the mystery of "Lost." :-)

Hey Megan, first off great post, very detailed and I couldn't agree with you more. One thing I noticed not sure if you have or not. Remember in season 6 episode 1(i believe) when Juliet really dies in Sawyer's arms. She says to him "Lets go for coffee, Let's do dutch" or something along those lines. The funny thing is when Juliet and Sawyer meet in the flash sideways at the candy machine, she says the same thing. Almost makes me wonder is if you die, you can remember the last conversation you had with the person you cared about most. Meaning since Juliet died saying those last words, she sees Sawyer again and that's what comes to mind. Anyways just wanted to put in my two cents.

One other thing, I know you can't have all your questions answered but we all know the the Smoke monster can impersonate any dead body on the island, but how was walt on the island when he was off it and not dead? I believe when locke was in the ditch.. well I think it was Locke. Anyways hope you like my idea. Thanks again for the awesome post.

It depends on the kind of shows you like. If you like unique storytelling, compelling characters and a touch of time travel, I say go for it.

If you are the type of viewer who gets frustrated easily and can't kind of go with the flow to see where the writers will take you, then maybe you should borrow a couple of the first season DVDs before you commit to a purchase.

Hope this helps.

I'm not glad it's over but as Terry O'Quinn said in an interview, you have to close the book when you get to the end. And this was the end of the book for "Lost."

...in that I never watched one episode.

It was a very sad night (and long). We watched the 2 hour journey leading up to 2.5 hour finale so we were exhausted afterward.

I do feel a lot of questions weren't answered but in the big scheme they really aren't as important as the big question of "what's real".

A few of my favorite moments: All the rememberings, finally seeing Juliette (totally knew she was going to be the ex-wife), Sayid reuniting with Shannon, seeing Boone, Jack jumping MIB outside the cave and they both realize he's human again, every moment with Desmond.

I think this is the only series I have ever watched from beginning to end more than once. It's been a fabulous ride but I am glad it is over.

You've definitely got a point about there not being anything new under the sun. As someone once said, there are only 7 stories in humanity and they just keep getting played over and over.

I've never seen Haunts of the Very Rich, but it vaguely rings a bell.

However the beauty of "Lost" was it told its stories in truly unique ways and on top of that the characters were people you really, really cared about. Add to that fabulous acting and production values and "Lost" stands on its own as a classic.

And don't worry, my party can't be pooped!

Sorry, I just read your very detailed post about the finale on your blog, and I see that you wanted more answers.

For me it was okay not to get answers to everything. That would have been too pat.

But I understand that a lot of fans will feel that way.

I understand your feeling that way, but at the same time, I think Michael will always be trapped on the island so he couldn't be there.

As many have noted, Walt couldn't be there because he's about ten feet tall now. Charlotte, Miles, Ana Lucia and Daniel all seemed to get their moments in the last couple of weeks and last night, so they didn't really need to be there.

And it's entirely possible that Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje who played Mr. Eko, simply didn't want to come back. Though the character's been gone so long,I didn't miss him.

I gave the producers a lot of leeway with who was there and who wasn't.

I haven't watched TV in years, so I've never seen Lost, but what you're describing is just like the plot of an old made-for-TV movie, The Haunts of the Very Rich.

Obviously, Lost was much more involved and artfully done, but even never having watched it I had a feeling that was where it was going, just from hearing people talk about it.

There's nothing new under the sun. lol

I think you could be right about that. Hurley was able to do things his way and it would have been just like him to be responsible for the sideways universe.

I loved it. I have invested 6 years of my life into watching and studying this show. I don't know what my new routine will be. It used to be watching LOST, then listening to LOST podcasts, reading message boards and Doc Jensen's recaps. Now what?

If you paid attention, you would have caught all the similarities in scenes and set up like Megan pointed out. I watched it with my husband last night, but since he was more of a casual observer to a very intricate show, he didn't pick up on all the connections that were being made. So I wept alone.

It would have been nice to see more of the characters, but I understand why they weren't included. Christian said the place they were in was what they created to meet each other. Maybe Ana Lucia, Daniel, Miles and others decided to go elsewhere, or to have their own meeting places in the afterlife. They weren't as connected to the group as a whole or even specific characters.

Plus, I think this funeral/party/reunion hinged on Jack's presence so maybe this is the gathering he would have wanted.

I can't wait for the DVD to come out on August 24. I know they'll include more answers there.

I am sad, drained, but very very satisfied.

I thought they did a fantastic job of tying up the story in a way that was true to the series. There was no dumbing down, no compromises...

But I felt emotionally drained by the end...and today? I feel like I usually do the day after a funeral.

I guess it was ok, but I wanted more. In the end, though, I still think it's the best show ever. I blogged about it:

I was actually VERY satisfied with the end. Much more satisfied than I thought I would be.

My one real major issue... not enough of the characters were in the final group moving on together. I especially wondered why people like Ana Lucia, Daniel, Charlotte, and Miles weren't there... since they were in the final episodes. Michael and Walt? Mr. Echo? I just wished they had ALL been there.

One aspect that people don't seem to be picking up on as much is the fact that Hurley ends up with Jacob's powers, but is able to wield them in his own way (and it helps that he's not as emotionally stunted and rule-bound as Jacob was).

I think he was ultimately responsible for the sideways universe/afterlife, as implied by the discussion with Ben on the island.
