Lots of Sweet Offerings from Rosh Hashanah Celebrations
by Kalyn Denny

Apple Honey ChallahThe two day celebration of Rosh Hashanah which marks the start of High Holy Days leading up to Yom Kippur started Wednesday at sundown. Blogher Religion and Spirituality Editor Mata has done a great job introducing us to Rosh Hashanah traditions, one of which is the eating of sweet foods as a symbol of the wish for a sweet new year. Here are thoughts from some well-known food bloggers who are celebrating the Jewish holidays and sharing recipes for special foods they love to make at this time of year.

First, in the photo is some wonderful-looking Apple Honey Challah with Blueberry Peach Butter from Ari at Baking and Books. Ari discusses some of the meanings of Rosh Hashanah food traditions in this wonderfully informative post. There are also recipes for Honey Vanilla Challah, Honey-Rose Ice Cream with Pomegranate Syrup, and Chocolate and Apricot Challah.

There is a wonderful round-up of Rosh Hashanah recipes at Jewish-Israeli Blog Awards Winner Gluten Free Bay including recipes for many traditional Jewish dishes. If you celebrate Jewish holidays, or know anyone who does, be sure to bookmark this link.

For the holidays, Isaiah from Gluten Free Bay also decided to revise the recipe for her favorite Rosh Hashanah cake, so she previewed her round-up with Gluten Free Honey Cake for Rosh Hashanah, version 2.0.

At Once Upon a Feast in Canada, Ruth shares her thoughts on a Rosh Hashanah Dinner menu, including some very definite ideas about what she will *not* be making, and some definite musts. She traditionally has four courses, all with a sweet note to them. (Update 9-15, here is another post about how the Rosh Hashanah dinner turned out.)

Rosa's Yummy Yums also has a great collection of Recipes for Rosh Hashanah, already mentioned by Mata, but I thought it should also be included here in case people missed it.

And finally, The Jew and the Carrot has an interview called Rosh Hashanah with Joan Nathan, in which a famous cookbook author who writes about Jewish food shares her tips for a perfect Rosh Hashanah celebration.

Blogher Food Editor Kalyn Denny also writes at Kalyn's Kitchen.
