When I think of the main characters of Deborah Harkness' A Discovery of Witches, the quote by Virgil that says “love conquers all” is the first thing that comes to mind. Matthew and Diana are two creatures whose paths were never meant to cross, but when a common interest brings them, and a whole slew of other creatures, together, their lives are changed forever.
Everything started the day Diana asked for the Ashmole 782 manuscript, but what this unusual witch didn’t know was that every other creature wanted the manuscript, but for a completely different reason. Luckily, Diana was able to find creatures that were on her side in a world that wanted to destroy her. Matthew did everything he could to protect Diana and in doing so ended up finding his one true love.
As a true romantic, I admired the relationship between Matthew and Diana. I rooted for them before they even knew what was happening between them and once they realized how they felt, I wanted to keep everyone away from them so they could just be happy together. However, in a world of vampires, witches, and daemons, things don’t usually work together nicely, which just adds to the fight for Matthew, a vampire, and Diana, a witch, as well as their families and friends, to make this work.
The size of the book (over 570 pages) taunted me at first, but once I invested myself into Deborah Harkness’ characters, I had a hard time putting the book down. If you have an imagination and enjoy a good love story, then A Discovery of Witches is a book you should definitely check this book out.
