M3 Summit: One for the Daddy Bloggers

The big news among men and dad bloggers is the upcoming Modern Media Man Summit, or M310, the first conference dedicated solely to the blogging man. M3 Summit will take place September 9 through 11 in Atlanta at the Omni Hotel-CNN Center.

Though many of the details have yet to be set, according to ModernMediaMan.com, the organizers are “working to bring together the entire men’s marketplace: bloggers, podcasters, videobloggers, online TV and radio broadcasters, social media influencers, consumers and small business owners.”

The general consensus among daddy bloggers seems to be, “it’s about time!” Jason at DadCentric.com expresses his envy of mom blogger conferences and the timeliness of M3 Summit:

... while a few brave male souls venture to BlogHer every year, there to suffer the indignities of being treated like loincloth-clad Chuck Heston in Planet Of The Apes ('GET YOUR STINKING PAWS OFF OF ME YOU DAMN DIRTY MOMMY BLOGGER!' 'It speaks! And in all caps, just like so many of us!')...let's face it, BlogHer is and rightfully should be a forum by and for women. We're cool with that. In fact, it's awesome. The blogosphere has become a place where women have the power and influence that they're so often denied elsewhere, and everyone is better because of it. (Just kidding about the Chuck Heston stuff, ladies. Were I not planning a vacation in August, I'd go to BlogHer, clad in naught but a beard and loincloth.) But still we wonder: when will we have a real, bigtime blog conference for dads? When, Lawd, when? When's gonna be OUR time?

Johnny T of the Daddy Yo Blog says the M3Summit is nothing short of a revolution:

A lot of ROCKIN stuff has been taking place in the world of the daddy blogger and it has everyone fired up. As well they should be. With the upcoming Modern Media Man Summit in Atlanta this September and the launch of the Dad Revolution site, there is plenty to be fired up about. I myself am pretty stoked to see these come about and I throw my full support behind both.
So I started thinking about what it means to me to "revolutionize" my fatherhood and what it says of me to say that I am one to support all this. I am all for seeing the typical "TVDad" model of fatherhood smashed into a thousand pieces in the street and run over by every child who owns a tricycle. I think it's great to see so many dads and dad bloggers standing up to say that we are engaged fathers who take great joy in the role we have in life and in the fact we can hold up just as well (or almost as well) as our counterparts.

Jim Turner, M3 co-founder, conference manager and veteran daddy blogger, was kind enough to field my questions about the event and his team's lofty plans.

Gina: Daddy blogger Jack Be Nimble said, “2010 is the Year of the Daddy Blogger not because we expect or want to be courted by the brands but because of the Brotherhood of the Fatherhood. Because we are reaching out to each other and building a community. Because we have different challenges than the moms and it is nice to have a man to talk to and share thoughts with.” What do you see as the primary purpose of the M3 Summit?

Jim: I really see us as a way to get the daddy blog community focused and together with some common ground. We have seen our counterparts make great strides to achieve a voice and a way to evangelize their passion. We have yet to have a vehicle to allow us to come together to create that voice.

Gina: How’s the response been so far by men and fathers in the blogsphere?

Jim: The response has been overwhelming and inspirational as far as their support and help. I would begin my pitch of our idea and before I could finish they wanted to be a part of it and offered up their support and assistance immediately. Everyone I talked to said "I'm in, what can I do?" It seems that they all wanted this to happen and everyone had a plan to do it. It was just that time. In fact that is what was usually stated right from the start "It's about time!"

I was more overwhelmed by the support and offers from Moms and the women that wished us well. We see them as our mentors in this and it was nice to be

Very much looking forward to going, but very curious as to the brands that show up and their take on us dads. Either way, this is a great start and something those of us who have been dad blogging for a long time hope to walk away with a great deal of new knowledge.

All kinds of fun stuff being offered, like a VIP package for the 42nd ticket buyer.

I was lucky to have lunch with Jim last week and know that he has amazing speakers, tracks, and sponsors lined up.

Moms this is the event to send your husband to, to get him to blog and appreciate all your hard efforts. It's also going to be a great place for dad bloggers to get the support of their community.

Rock on, Jim!
