Kick-Ass Moments From the "Mad Men" Season Finale (Spoilers)

Don and megan

Well, it wasn't the kick-ass, in-your-face finale of last year, but the season 4 finale of Mad Men still had some surprises -- and some kick-ass moments.

First, the really big news: Don (Jon Hamm) and Megan (Jessica Pare) are engaged! And she's wearing his dead, fake wife's engagement ring!

Second piece of news: Peggy (Elisabeth Moss), with a little help from Ken (Aaron Staton), gets the agency its first business in ten weeks by snagging a pantyhose account.

Third piece of news: Good ol' Bets (January Jones) fires Carla (Deborah Lacey) after a million years of service. Over crazy Glenn. WTF? The only recurring black character for miles around and she gets fired? Oh, a hard rain is gonna fall from this angry black woman as soon as she signs up with the local chapter of the NAACP. (Um, I don't mean me, I mean Carla.)

Fourth piece of news: Joan (Christina Hendricks) is pregnant and hubby, who's in Vietnam, thinks it's his. Think again, son. That little bun in the oven has Sterling stamped on his butt -- and just wait 'til Daddy Roger finds out Joan didn't go through with "the procedure."

Fifth and final piece of big news: Bets and the new hubby finally move out of the old Draper homestead. When Don tells Betty in the middle of the empty house they shared that he's engaged she can barely choke out a whispered, "I'm happy for you." Yeah, right.

But now that we're back on the topic, let's focus on the upcoming Whitman, er, Draper nuptials. Too bad premarital counseling wasn't popular in the 1960s, 'cause Don and Megan are prime candidates. Here are a few of the questions I'd ask:

  • Don, are you going to wait until before or after your 10th wedding anniversary to tell your wife that you're an imposter who deserted from the army and took over another man's life?
  • Don, do you remember when Megan said she wanted a career like Peggy? What do you think of that?
  • Don, and when Megan gets pregnant and decides she wants a career as well, what will you think of that?
  • Don, are you going to wait until after the honeymoon to cheat on Megan, or are you just going to start her off right and fool around during the engagement also?
  • Megan, honey -- what the hell are you thinking? Yeah, he's hot and powerful and has lots of money: Screw around with him, sure, but don't marry him!

But who didn't love the wonderful, over-cigarettes bonding moment between Peggy and Joan after they find out about the engagement?

Joan and peggy

They're both like, "We work our butts off and can barely catch a break and little Megan'll probably be replacing us in a couple of days. Can you believe this sh*t!"

Finally, let's turn our attention to next season. So how far into the future are they going to jump this time?

The title of the finale, "Tomorrowland," just about screams that once again they're going to jump ahead. One year? Five years? Ten? Nah, not ten.& No one wants to see handsome Jon Hamm aged that much.

I'll go out on a limb here and say one year -- just enough time for Don to have gotten himself into real trouble all over again.

I love the idea of Megan being an "Eve Harrington." And you're right, the writers had big plans for Megan way back when she comforted Sally after she ran away.

Thanks for commenting.

Dr. Faye was way too clinical, had to look up everything, also, she held no mystery. And Megan, well, when she entered his office an episode or two ago, i thought I saw Eve Harrington pop outta her right then and there. She's competent, otherly and aesthetically conscious with her languages, art, etc, Dr. Faye, nice but no way. Also, Megan's a thoroughbred even though she's quiet, she has wants and she wanted Don.

Forecasted in my own blog that lovely, diaphanous Joan would keep Roger's baby, just as the writer's are dismissing his role; a trust fundy that no longer has the hunger that Pete has, as if he ever did, though he did sound pitch perfect, until the unbearable lightness of being him went from light, then bitter, then embarrassing.

Yes, finally, Betty and Joan trust one another, need one another and like one another. Friends, fantastic women.

This show is amazing to me, the only US tele I'd even think of buying on iTunes, it's almost Cherkovian, universal, just when I thought it was all American nostalgia an English actor said, 'no, we all get it'...

I like all the women but Betty, she's a trophy wife, her only friend being that ever precious pack of cigs and she chases after Daddy figures, married Don, lost her daddy, lost her husband daddy to other women, then married that awful yet patient political clown that can't wait to parade her in his first campaign...

This series really means something, like Weiner says, it's all about consequences.
It's all about secrets, trying to be something other than who we are as we wear so many hats, etc.

luv it, cannot wait, so happy i have past episodes because when you go back, you see all the little clever clues the mostly female cast of writers tease and expose all over the place, preparing the viewer, in fact, i'm pretty sure this is exactly why the writing is so good, women get consequence, much more than men....

yes, brava, kick ass moments, kick ass writing, by mostly women, certo....

Oh man, those dresses! Those geometric shapes and bold colors were just great. Not real comfortable to wear with all the girdles, pantyhose, bullet bras and corsets, but they looked really good.

As far as Don, I know I should dislike him and frown on how he handles just about every relationship, but I don't. One of the things that's so great about the show is that here you have Don who does some reprehensible things, especially when it comes to women, but I understand him.

I wouldn't want to be married to him, but I understand and sympathize with him. That's a testament to how great the character is written and how wonderfully Jon Hamm plays him.

What will I do 'til the show comes back!?

I grew up in the sixties - are they in 1964? I forgot..if so I was 5 years old. The cocktails and smoking was the "thing" to do because even my parents got into that for awhile, eventually they quit because it was just a fad. But I remember the dresses - I loved those dresses. I really love the depiction of the women. I guess I'll have to pick up Betty Friedan and read why Betty is the way she is. Don is a piece of work Anxiety anxiety anxiety. I just can't believe all the women who throw themselves at him. I'm sure it exists today as well. Look at David Letterman. Bedding everybody who walked by.
