Mad Men style, hold the pointy bra

Hallelujah! is the refrain of those of us in desperate need of some good, scripted entertainment this election season--for Mad Men is back in full swing.

Walking around the streets of NYC, actual home of the actual Madison Avenue, I'm seeing fashion inspired by series making its way over to the other avenues too. Think textured fabrics, beige skirts, princess seamed coats, tailoring that didn't come off the racks at H&M.

I admit it bums me out a wee bit to say goodbye to the empire-waisted maternity wear that passed for fashion over the past year or so. But unless I'm forced to cram my postpartum tuchus in a pencil skirt, I think this is a trend I can get behind.

With the world in turmoil and our economic future looking all wackadoodle, it's nice to think back to the mid-century age of innocence, even if it was an innocence mostly in our own minds.

I adore imagining my whole city filled with women in opera gloves and men in fedoras who actually thought to take them off in the elevator.

Shoes were polished. Bra straps didn't show. Underwear was actually...under. Your wear.

Not that I'm going to walk around town in a costume this Fall (no ballgowns for at cocktail parties me) but I love the idea of bringing a little elegance back into my wardrobe with a nice cashmere cardigan and some tasty little patent pumps.

Anyone else? Any 50s-era fashions you've got your eye on right now? Send me links! Mama needs to shop.

What can I say, it's easier than remembering to suck in my stomach all night.

I grant you some of the late 50s and early 60's fashions can be cool - I'm thinking Audrey Hepburn kind stuff. Mock turtle necks, jumpers and tights. Yes, I could do that, if I lost 100lbs but still I'd look cool.

That damn pointy bra was the only kind most women could buy at the time. Those of us that aren't pointy, well it never fit. There were gaps and there were reason why women wore cardigan sweaters that had little to do with style. Cones from hell.

And the other pain inducing fashion must have "girdles." How do you think those women looked so sleek? The old style body smashers had rubber, bone, steel or other pain reinforcing resistance to not let a bump or bulge appear normal.

I sure hope modern construction techniques will not allow or require those two fashion items to be resurrected.

Hate, hate, hate and just don't care for them.

I love the entire costume era, from the foundation up. Especially the patent leather. Laurie, I have some terrific fake-fur stoles to go with those gloves if you're out here soon :) That said, I would never want to roll the calendar back to those years for women (shiver).

Now ya'll are enticing me to actually watch the show!

Thanks for this. The costumes on the show are fantastically done (although I can hold the curled bangs).

I've inherited a whole vintage glove collection over the years from various relatives and keep them in this cool old pink travel case. Hm...another post idea? Thanks Jenny.

I have been loving all the elegant lines and sophisticated shapes coming back for fall.  I'm totally going to unpack my long gloves.
