[Editor's Note: As if our girls don't have enough messages flying at them about their size and shape and how it contributes to their worthiness, there's now a diet book being marketed for girls as young as four. FOUR. Obviously, some controversy surrounds the book, Maggie Goes on a Diet. SAHM Answers tackles the subject and asks what your thoughts are... so share them. I bet you have some! -Jenna]

Little Girls and Diet Books. Really?:

Maggie Goes on a DietIn October, a book entitled Maggie Goes on a Diet will be released. According to a description at Amazon.com, “Maggie is transformed from being extremely overweight and insecure to a normal sized girl who becomes the school soccer star. Through time, exercise and hard work, Maggie becomes more and more confident and develops a positive self image.”

“The book’s cover art depicts a heavyset girl holding up a pink dress as she looks in the mirror. The image reflected back shows a thinner version of herself.”

And here’s the kicker: the book is being marketed to children as young as four. It seems that this is going to be one of the most controversial children’s books of the year, since there is criticism every which way author Paul M. Kramer turns.

This makes me so sad. It seems like while the author's heart was in the right place if his "to inspire" line was at all truthful, but as someone else said...the execution is terrible. Perhaps a book on healthy eating and fun exercise activities would be more appropriate. Teaching girls that 1. they have to be thin to be cool 2. they should aspire to wearing skimpy pink dresses and 3. the word "diet" something you do to lose weight is so wrong. Those are 3 things that I'm trying desperately NOT to let my daughters learn.

And of course, there are two sides to every story. Not that I agree with the author's side, but for what it's worth, here's why he said he wrote it: "To Inspire."

children should not be reading this kinds of books, they should learn to become healthy for the right reasons and not to become a soccer star at school.

And why is the idealized version of a girl a slim li'l thing wearing a pink dress? Argghhh.

I so agree that little girls don't need to be reading books about how they're too fat to be awesome, like the school soccer star. Parents should be reading books about how to implement heathy eating habits in their girls' lives. A 4 year old isn't responsible for their own circumstances.

This makes me cranky! I think we need to teach children to enjoy life, appreciate who they, never judge a book by its cover, and how to eat healthy. I believe a book like this is very harmful tool - what is the message we are sending to our children?

blogher NO!!! Nonononono! Parents need books on managing their own lifestyles. The rest is spillover.

blogher NO. Parents need books on how to teach - and practice - healthy behaviors themselves.

I agree with Anne. I would also like to see a book that says Annie and Billy go to play!!!!

I agree with Anne-horrible title but could work if it was for healthy eating

A title change will not save what is at its base a really horrible idea.

Maybe a better title for this book is "Maggie Learns Healthy Eating", but the message might be a good one for children in homes with parents who don't teach proper diet and exercise. I know this my shock people, but sometimes obese people have children, and those children end up obese as a result of bad food habits. Since most children don't do the grocery shopping, perhaps a book about changing your diet choices would be a useful teaching tool for kids to bring questions about food to their parents and open up a conversation.

We have to do something as parents to stop these food companies from marketing "pure junk" to our kids. I'm happy to see calorie counts on menus. You think again when ordering the jumbo meal.

And that is why I weight issues. Young girls shouldn't be told to watch their weight.

the word "diet" needs to stop being used in regular vocabulary. Eating right and being active is the best way to maintain a healthy lifestyle. We must all realize that people come in all shapes and sizes and that weight is nothing but a number!!!

This is DEPLORABLE. "Maggie is transformed from being extremely overweight and insecure to a normal sized girl who becomes the school soccer star." What in the world is "normal?!" So we're going to tell our daughters that if they aren't slim they're not normal? And if they're not slim/normal they can't attain a goal (i.e. soccer star)? I have a 1-year old and I hurt for her knowing that this crap is being geared toward kids in her age bracket. Can't kids just be kids and parents do the hard work of being parents? And this is written by a man, no less...

Agreed! Children need to be taught how to be active and make healthy food choices, not diet. Maggie is going to grow up with a self-image and eating disorder.

Absolutely not. Kids that young shouldn't even know what that word means. What's next, Maggie Has Liposuction And Rhinoplasty?
