Make An Exfoliating Face Scrub From Pantry Staples
By kim_ann on August 04, 2012
Oatmeal. Sugar. Vanilla extract. A carrier oil. Those simple ingredients make an amazing exfoliating face scrub that’s gentle enough to use every day and leaves your skin looking great and feeling soft and mosturized.
You likely have the ingredients in your pantry already, but before you mix them up there are a few things to consider.
Oatmeal expands when wet. To avoid clogging your drain with large flakes, grind the oatmeal using a spice or coffee grinder or a mortar and pestle.
Your choice of a carrier oil depends on your skin and possibly even the season. I’ve found that sweet almond oil is perfect in the winter because it’s a great moisturizer. For the summer, I switched to apricot kernel oil which is a little lighter and smooths skin to improve its texture. Grapeseed oil is also very light and good for oily skin because of it’s astringent qualities. For very dry skin, try olive oil.
If you are new to making your own personal products and overwhelmed with the carrier oil options jojoba oil is a good choice because it is very similar to the natural oil on our skin making it a good oil for most people. Also, since it is like the oil on our skin it strengthens sensitive skin, balances oily skin and clears acne. Jojoba oil is a popular carrier oil and often available in pharmacies and health food stores, including Trader Joe’s (near the shampoo section).
Here's the recipe:
- 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
- 1 tablespoon dark brown sugar
- 1 tablespoon sweet almond oil or other carrier oil
- 1 tablespoon ground oatmeal
- 2 teaspoon vanilla extract
Mix the ingredients together and enjoy!
