The traditional Irish breakfast is a wonder to behold. It's enormous. As Kathy describes it in her global breakfast roundup on Healthy Happy Life,
A proper full Irish breakfast is known as a "fry." Lots of fried meat and even bread. White and black "puddings" are also included. There may also be Irish soda bread, a slightly sweet, white-flour bread that is raised with baking soda, rather than yeast. It is covered in an assortment of raisins.

I like mine with griddled tomato and strong Irish breakfast tea -- but the point is, it's hearty. As Pat at Mille Fiori Favoriti noted, "you don't need to eat again for the rest of the day!"
You could always go full-out and follow the tutorial for making your own blood sausage, called "black pudding" in Ireland by Hank at Hunter Angler Gardener Cook. But the rest of us might like some ideas for festive Irish breakfasts that don't require as much … commitment.
Other Ways to Eat Irish on St. Patrick's Day
- Contributing editor Kalyn Denny has a roundup of soda bread and brown bread variations that would make awesome morning treats.
- You could also celebrate St. Pat's day with Irish steel-cut oats -- they're great. Nika's Culinaria's got a nice Irish oatmeal recipe sweetened with agave.
- Connie at Home Cooking Rocks mad Irish boxty -- a potato-egg cake with sausage and onion.
- Speaking of potatoes -- Beth at the Confused Homemaker uses Irish butter and cheese in her Irish potatoes. I would eat these for breakfast AND dinner.
- And BlogHer member Cdahle goes casual with her St. Pat's breakfast, with green eggs and green creamer in her coffee.
