Have you had “the talk” with the significant people in your life? Do they know what you would want to have happen if you become terminally ill or injured, and you can’t make decisions for yourself? I urge you to share this information with your loved ones and to find out their wishes as well.
My husband and I have discussed this privately and shared our wishes with our teenage children. We’ve also had this discussion with our own parents. While I hope this issue never comes up, I know from personal experience that having all this out in the open ahead of time is a huge relief if you find yourself in this horrible situation. It helps with the stress and the guilt at a time when you’re emotionally overwhelmed.
In addition to discussing this subject with your loved ones, I highly recommend creating legal documents to ensure your wishes are followed (especially if your loved ones seem upset by your wishes). There’s a good overview of the different types of documents here. I ended up creating all 3.
