Making a Statement - Happy Prints for Unhappy Times

I've never been one to wear words. I've never liked the feeling of paying to have someone's brand emblazoned across my chest or hanging from my arm. And I never really got into the whole graphic T, "Kiss me, I'm cute" type of look. (Let's not even get into having "juicy" printed across my derriere.) And statement-making tattoos? Not really me either. I guess I always sort of felt that, as a general rule, statement-making shouldn't be accessorized.

But I think I've found my exception. Because recently I've found myself seriously coveting some statement-making bling - for my home. My highly perfectionist mother-in-law is coming to visit soon and as a not-so-subtle (and probably slightly immature) act of rebellion, I really want to buy this print to put over our mantle.

Failure is always an option

Aside from the satisfying look of horror on her face it will surely elicit, it's also just kind of an awesome statement (seriously, right?) and I love the way the typography literally illustrates the statement.

Then again, this pillow from Etsy seller Alexandra Ferguson might be more useful for all types of ornery visitors.

Be nice or leave

For those of us not aiming to keep guests in line, perhaps a bit of good, reassuring cheer in these trying times is more in order? For that, there's the ubiquitious WWII-era Keep Calm and Carry On reprints

Keep Calm and Carry On

Oh those stiff-lipped British! Do a search on etsy or google and you'll find a plethora of colors and styles and even some clever spoofs ("Keep Calm and Have a Cupcake" or "Freak Out and Call Mom", among my favorites), but I'm liking this crisp royal blue version.

More recession-friendly, glass-half-full type of prints:

Every Cloud has a Silver lining

Every Cloud Has A Silver Lining, available at Urban Outfitters.

Our Love

Our Love, also at Urban.

Clap Your Hands Say Yeah at The Small Stakes.

Obviously, I'm having a serious flirtation with the typographic print poster. Affordable, playful and well-designed...what more could I want? But I get that statement-making is not for everyone so...what do you think?

I, too do not wear messages on my chest. But I do have a few plaques that sum up how I feel.

1. Dull people have immaculate houses

2. Common sense is most uncommon

3. Everyone is entitled to my opinion

4. (I embroidered this one) Chocolate was never meant to be shared.

I do love my bumper sticker: God Bless The Whole World, No Exceptions.

I take it you are looking forward to this visit. ;-)

Admit it. Wouldn't an eye catching, bad girl tattoo be great for this visit? Maybe you can do a temporary one and not tell anyone.

In the end, pick your spots - and say it with a smile. I have to admit to an occasional success with this along the way.
