Pussy willow 3

Just last week it was still gray and snowy out, and a few intrepid ice fishermen were still braving the ice, but this past week has been all sunshine and light. We discovered the very first flowers of the year:

The geese returned home to hang out with the seagulls:

And the pheasants have begun staking out their territory. This rowdy guy seems to have claimed our backyard:

Spring’s glorious arrival couldn’t have come at a better time: they’ve canceled our bus service. Janne and I had never given much thought to our carfree lifestyle because it had always been so easy. I never found a bit of London that wasn’t accessible by public transport and, chaotic as it was, I loved cycling there. Helsinki cycling and public transport are a dream, plus it’s so small that all the downtown areas are easily navigable by foot. When we took up residence in Pähkinä nothing much changed--in fact, the local bus was a deciding factor in our move. It was an hourly service only a twenty-minute walk away and then, of course, we had our bikes. Now, minus the bus, it’s just the bikes. Eventually I know we’ll need to make some transport changes, but in the meantime I’m just hugely relieved that the snow has vanished from our little dirt road and my bike can finally be stripped of its winter tires.

I’ll admit to having derived some masochistic pleasure from Nordic winter cycle commuting on a dirt road, but man am I grateful for the warm weather. Goodbye frosty eyelashes and numb toes, hello sunshine.
