Sometimes I wear so many hats, I don't remember which one is on my head. Just last week, I arrived at a local business to interview the owner and found myself shopping for a birthday gift for my daughter's friend. This task was quickly interrupted by the shop owner who saw my tape recorder and notebook and asked If I was the gal from the magazine who was writing a story about the shop. "Yes," I quickly replied, "Do you have this bracelet in silver?"
My worn-out hat is definitely the "mom" one. And like most worn-out items, it is the most comfortable. It's the hat that I sometimes sneak on underneath another hat. Then there's the PTA hat, the community volunteer hat, the teacher hat, the "cute girl you married" hat, the business hat, and the most uncomfortable hat of all, the one with my name on it. That hat is somehow associated with guilt...like when you're invited on a girl's weekend and say "yes".
What I've learned is that there is no such thing as a perfect balance. Peace is being able to deal with a worn-out hat and tolerating a new and uncomfortable one. You'll have your favorites, as I do, but enjoy each one when you're wearing it and don't wish you were wearing another one. Sometimes you'll be able to sneak on the mom hat without anyone watching, and that's okay. Since it's quite worn-out and comfortable, there's an excellent chance no one will notice you're wearing two hats (you certainly won't).
