When the good ladies of BlogHer asked me if I'd like to blog about maternal health, I thought they said mental health, and was all, like, oh, people, I am totally not the person to ask. Then I read the e-mail again, and realized that they'd said maternal health, and heaved a sigh of relief. Maternal health I can do. I am both maternal, and interested in health!
There's a lot of interesting stuff that falls into the category of maternal health, if we take that term to refer broadly to issues related to health that are of interest and concern to mothers. Prenatal health and well-being, post-natal health and wellbeing, mental health (which I am perfectly willing to discuss, with the disclaimer that I do not claim myself to be of entirely sound mind, under any circumstances, ever) and any and all environmental concerns that relate to the condition, experience and work of motherhood, to name but a few.
That latter category of concerns - relating to the environment - is of particular interest to me, as a mother, an expectant mother, and an inhabitant of the earth, which is why I am really looking forward to providing monthly updates on BlogHers Act Canada. BlogHers Act Canada was launched at this year's BlogHer conference as an adjunct to BlogHers Act, initiated and organized by Canadian women bloggers. Our aim was - and is - to provide Canadian women bloggers with a forum for addressing global concerns from a Canadian perspective. In the case of this year's project, we've been rallying women bloggers to address concerns related to the environment, and we focus on different concerns each month (non-Canadians are, of course, more than welcome to participate). I'll be introducing BlogHers Act Canada's monthly challenge at the beginning of each month, to introduce BlogHers to the theme and to invite everyone - non-Canadians included! - to participate. (For those of you who are on top of your calendars, that means that January's challenge will be introduced next week.)
The rest of the time, I'll be blogging about different topics related to maternal health, and drawing your attention to what other women bloggers are writing about on those topics (as I noted above, I'm currently pregnant, so you may notice a slight skew towards prenatal topics, but I'll work hard to balance that.)
(Oh, right - who am I? I'm Catherine, better known online as Her Bad Mother. 'Nuff said.)
